What would you chose and why? The reason I am asking is I have never had unemployment before. I have heard it is not all that great. I know the pay would be less, but i heard it screws you on taxes. Can someone shed some light on it for me? History of why I am in this position: We moved up north and i got a job working for Redline Performance (www.1redline.com) building dune buggies. Well come the start of the year we shut down the production line due to 2 things. 1. Gas tanks no longer met EPA because of 08 standards. 2. Transmissions have been breaking to easy and we need to figure that out. (must be a 5mt... lol) so since the start of the year I have been working for IFS (Industrial Finishing Service) They do mass production painting and powder coating (ie: paint arctic cat plastics and powder coat the roll cage for there prowler) I have to go in and see my boss and redline today to hear my options and what is going on. From what another employee told me his options were work at IFS for 4 months or unemployment. I liked building buggies and working with the people there, but IFS, just simply sucks. crap hours crap work place, and mostly, not what I was hired to do. So that is how I got to the above question. Any insight would be nice and very helpful. Thanks guys and gals.
Work work work, unemployment should be a very last resort. I will not let myself go back on unemployment, ever. It is horrible. If you have the opportunity to work for 4 months then get let go, use those 4 months to get a steady paycheck, while looking for a new position else where. Stay away from unemployment Bill, seriously.
step 1...go outside get on a sled step 2...drive your sled into a tree step 3...collect insurance money for sled step 4...get paid leave for workers comp step 5...make it last till 4 months from now(so crash hard) sorry, I shouldn't joke.....above post for the win
By working, on your resume it shows that you continued to work until you were forced to be layed off. In the hiring managers eyes that shows dedication. Also remember that unemployment is only like 40% of what you were getting paid, or some crap like that IIRC. Keep working. During non-work hours actively search for a job.
It sucks to have a crapy job but in my view any job is better than no job. Just keep looking for better oportunities.
One thing, I want to know if some of this advice is coming from people who have ACTUALLY BEEN ON UNEMPLOYMENT at some time and not just "i heard from a guy" stuff. depends, unemployment can be fine so long as you can save money. It doesn't screw you on taxes per se, its just that it is taxed like income and 90% of people on unemployment choose to defer the taxes until later rather than get a smaller check every 2 weeks. I made about $800 every 2 weeks on unemployment. not a lot of $ but enough to pay bills, especially since I had a working spouse also having been on unemployment had nothing to do with my job search. not everyone assumes you are some kind of lazy parasite if you get laid off of your job and don't have any other options.
Or be like me and search for a job while at work...but I doesn't sound like you have computer access at work..
I would take the job. its work to start with. 4 months isnt horrid, atleast its not permanent. Also working at IFS sounds like it will secure your position at redline (correct me if i am wrong). Also who knows maybe they will fix the gas tank and tranny issue quickly and it wont be a 4 month wait. unemployment should be the last resort. I would avoid it like the plague.
or who knows maybe they are just going to use you to wring whatever is left out of your worth and then nothing comes of it in 4 months except you were not able to devote enough time to finding the right job for you because you were miserable in a job you hate. finding the right job can be an 8 hour a day job, and you have the opportunity to do that. I don't get the "plague" part about unemployment. I have been laid off twice and both times it helped me get a better job.
I have been on unemployment, although at the time I did not have a significant other to pay the bills, my experience was not a good one, when tax time came around, I hardly got a refund. I was only getting $750 every other week which made it extremely hard to pay bills, rent at the time, and feed myself. If you think you can find another job within 2-4 weeks, it wouldn't be bad. Once you get past that point, it becomes a job in itself to get off of unemployment. Personally, never again, to each their own.
I have been contemplating this question for a bit too, just in case I don't find a replacement job for after my layoff. From what I read you are allowed to choose whether or not to have taxes withheld (do it or you'll screw it up guaranteed). The compensation you get is based on your last salary. From the www.uimn.org site: "Your weekly unemployment benefit amount will be about 50% of your average weekly wage, up to a state maximum of $538. The formula for determining your weekly amount is set out in MN Statute §268.07, Subd. 2. The maximum amount of benefits available will be one-third of your total wages in your base period, or 26 times your weekly benefit amount, whichever is less."
You do have the option to choose if you want taxes withheld or not, I chose not to. I did not make that much money at my previous employer so I needed all I could get. Good decision at the time, kicked myself in the rear later on. I'm not sure if this is a new procedure. My roommate at the time was on unemployment at the same time I was, he made about $15,000 more than I did at the time, and he recieved $750 / 2 week as well.
Pick work, look for another job on your free time, when you find it, quit! Thats what I just did, I'm starting my new gig monday!
This is my situation as well. I calculated that unemployment is better than getting a crap job. The max unemployment pays is like $320/week. I get the max. I figured, I'd need to make $10/hour to make getting a job justified. The job market is crap right now for retail, so I haven't gotten anything yet. I'm gonna keep applying for good jobs but in the meantime I'm good with it. My bills are covered and I have enough in savings to spend if I need to.
The job market is crap right now regardless. You can take unemployment and look towards other options (like I am looking at classes to take for an assoc. degree to start with), OR you can go from one crap job to another crap job to another and then on and so forth. This has been the case with me for the last 6 years. I've worked one stupid phone service job after another, and now I'm at a point where I just *can't* do it anymore. So I'm taking the unemployment. It IS there for a reason. I also think I'd feel much better at the end of the day if I was working PT and going to school. I wouldn't feel like 10 hours of my day is completely wasted catering to people who think that just because they can't see you through the phone, you don't have any feelings.
Bill, a bit off topic but I think you should build a list of companies in the area that interest you and actively market yourself. Study up on the company, tailor your resume for their company, send the resume over....then start calling them. If there's a specific position? You may have to go through HR, but make sure you call the companies and find out who is in charge of the position you're interested in. leave a voice mail or talk to the person...get his/her contact information and send your tailored resume over. On the unemployment issue- file whenever you can, get some income coming in the home while you carefully search for the next position. Also...even though you may get in front one or two companies do not stop marketing yourself until you have sealed the deal with the best company and position. If you need some interview tips you know how to get a hold of me. good luck!!!!!!!!!!
I work behind a phone. But i deny to be a robot. And screw customers who think yelling at you will get them anything. I deny every customer who yells at me.
On another note. It is kinda funny when people ask what you do for a job and you state nothing haha. I'm in school fulltime at UST so I'm not entirely looked at as a bum, but close .
We had external quality monitoring that dictated you have to take the callers' ****. Actually, because of that, I refuse to work on the phone for any company that uses this external quality organization, even if it's the "best in the industry"
Yeah, the economic/job indicators don't look great, but that all depends upon your skill-set. Mid to sr. positions have not been effected and companies are still hiring like crazy all across the US. Its a bummer for anyone in the call center industry that's not in upper management. That industry took a big crap years ago...finding a quality position in that industy without a degree is tough...damn near impossible. There are numerous positions that require 100% phone work (if that's your thing) that are not call center related and can make a good living (50-70K). Just last year alone I filled over a dozen positions with one client that was inside sales/account management. they even opted to let people work from home. position paid 55-60K base plus commission and bonuses (70-90K). The only position requirement we had was a good phone presence and some b to b sales experience. bottom line...don't give up and keep looking for the next step...it's there
yeah, but I focus on the Financial Industry and usually the 100K+ positions. I only filled those positions last year because that was my #1 client.
i see, i don't think i want to go back to the financial industry. though i suppose it wasn't that bad. i worked at tcf for almost 6 years in HS and college
I genrally work in A/R Management Outsourcing and the Investment side. I don't work with the banks...they are not the greatest employers
Redline is about 3 years old. If I survive the 4 months at IFS, there is NO garantee I will go back to redline then. I am a piss ant for them and just because I trudge through some **** does not mean I will be set afterwards. Thanks for the pointers, I may be in touch. General update: I talked to my boss today my options are 4 ten hour days working from like 2pm to midnight for the next four months, or unemployment. If I choose to work I get a 75 cent pay differential for working second shift. I do have a wife that makes damn good money as a nurse, so bills are covered. The biggest down fall to me working is I will almost never see my wife. I don't want that. Its like living a bachelor life with consequences.. lol Redline did also say if I choose unemployment when they are starting back up and hiring again, I would be #1 on the list. I would start at the pay I am at now when and if I would go back. The biggest reason I want to take the unemployment is because the GM said to shut production down we all dispersed to IFS, and then a week later he hires his kid full time salary! No body is happy about that and it sounds like my boss is getting tired of the GM's **** and is thinking of quiting too. I am not dedicated to the company as much as I am to my direct boss and co-workers. I liked who I worked with and what I did, but I did not care what name was on my paycheck. sorry if it comes across moody, I am just not very happy right now.
sorry to say but thay is pretty much true in any job... that's on ereason we got out... we treated our guys too well.. paid them too much in comparison to other shops... we figured people had to feed their family and pay bills... unfortunately we werent so we got out....
