FYI - Crucial Racing is currently having a sale on their coated uppipes and copper gasket kits for $210 shipped through NASIOC. I ordered one yesterday, and plan to install it next weekend. As far as I know, there are two different methods: 1. remove header and engine mount, and jack up the engine to get clearance required to remove/install the uppipe from underneath 2. remove the turbo, and pull the uppipe out of the top My current plan of attack is to go the removal of the turbo route, as I need to change out my coolant anyways. Also, I think that I'll have a better chance of getting a leak-free seal when the job is done. One question I have is this - Am I better off torquing the nuts/bolts as I go (ie, starting at the bottom and torquing to the header, then installing the turbo, and torquing to that), or should I loosely fit everything together first, and then torque the bolts from the bottom up? Also, if anyone has a "clicker-type" torque wrench that I could borrow for the weekend, that would be great. I'll buy you beer. Tom
i just ordered mine from them yesterday too and then i was lookin at the posts and saw you ordered yours too, it was kinda crazy. i didnt go with the crucial gaskets though i'm just gonna get oem ones and double up on the bottom gasket like russ and some other people have mentioned. the engine bolt trick sounds like its a fail proof method but alot of people say it isnt neccessary. i read the other day that once the downpipe is out you can work the up pipe out under the turbo where the downpipe usually is, i'm gonna try this and if it doesnt work i'll figure it out from there. russ told me he takes off the manifold and matt told me i had to pay to see his tricks  anyone else got any tips?
I installe dmy up-pipe on the lift in the shop with my tech.. we undid the heatsheilds, bolts etc and lifted the turbo side of the engine about .5 - 1in with a pole jack then slipped the old UP out and putt the new one in... all in all about 45mins work... why would you remove the turbo...??? and to do a coolant change??
Looks like something I can get done in an hour for install day. I have Jason's Helix uppipe and a handful of gaskets ready to be installed. The VF39 turbo will have to wait. :x
now is this for a wrx?? what year...?? should be straight forward.. we will have to go over the install list and see... SO people know I will help but I dont plan on working on everyones cars the whole night.. I am offering my lifts to use.. I will oversee the operation of the lifts so no-one dies... he he but I plan to eat lots.... and meet people
Ok, Nathan. I will talk to you if I'm gonna do this or not due to the fact that I'll have to get new gaskets later when I install the turbo later.
I don't really want to try and jack up the engine, and also don't want to remove the right side header. Also, removing the header will require me to purchase another gasket, and also up the chances of any pre-turbo leaks. Draining the coolant before removing the turbo will ensure that I won't make a mess on my garage floor that my puppy will want to drink. I need to change my coolant anyways, so I figure I'd kill two birds with one stone.
yes true.. header removal... hmm what about the turbo gaskets?? they gots to be spendy too..and yeah dont let ya puppy drink that coolant.. taste like crap I know... I tasted it by accident at the shop.. and it may give his balls a rash when he cleans them later.. he he
As far as I'm aware, there are only two gaskets on the turbo -- one for the downpipe, and one for the uppipe. I have both of these gaskets, along with the lower uppipe to header gasket. Also, I hope my puppy doesn't get a rash on HER balls, lol.   It's too bad that I'm both busy this weekend, and also won't have the uppipe in time to make it to the install meet.
Where will this install be at? I could give ya some help as I installed a one piece header/uppipe on my rex. Did it by myself in the garage. Hahaha, boy was it a pain though. Not only did I have to match up the bottom heads but also try to get the 5 studs through the turbo. I was all over the car like a monkey. But I would like to come out to the install, so I can meet new people and I have a lower "H" bar I need to get installed. I didn't have a breaker bar and didn't have much leverage as I was laying on my back trying to loosen the lower two nuts. One was covered in that rubbery underbody coat crap. I used about 100psi but still no budge. This should only take about 10min if I can get the two lower bolts free. Let me know when and where the install day will be. Thanks
Juicyfruit, please check this link: http://www.mnsubaru.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2604&highlight= It's tomorrow.
anyone discover any up pipe tricks at install day? i didnt make it down but i thought there was a couple people that were doin them.
The up-pipe install was a no-go. Too many cars and no replacement gaskets to fit in between the manifold and the heads. But it looked way easier to do with the car on a lift.
It is pretty straight forward... it still takes about an hour or so... I am going to be doing a couple for people who never got it done saturday night.. $50 to install... I was feeling bad about charging... but I gots to use all my equipment which costs me money... (lights, cleaner, compressor etc) and my time away form my boy... I only see him after work each night... sob sob I know but hey my family is important and I would rather see him than make $50 for 2 hrs work.. he he so nayone let me know as I will do these after hours so I dont then have to charge you shop rates.. owners are responsible to have all necessary replacment gaskets...
Nate, 50 is extremely cheap for an uppipe install...dont feel guilty about charging. you know you are the man.
thanks.. wish it were true.. ha ha ha.. I want to help but also need some cash for when my family visits...
wow 50 bucks i might have to take you up on that, i was gonna do it myself but when your ballin like me thats pocket change.
To be ballin, you need to already have an uppipe installed and room in the back for the ladies. Nate, will this be in the near future?
if you want to do yours... sure... have to work out a night that works.. you could try to come tonight.. got one happening.. but make sure you have the gaskets already... and the $50 and Dinner ha ha ha woohoo hoo
I am still debating if I should install the turbo at the same time or not. I have the gaskets already, too.
we will see how this one goes.. if it is more than I remember maybe I will charge a little more.. but probably not.. too nice a guy.. ha ha ha
hey nate how did the install go? what all do you remove to get the stock up pipe out? do you remove the passenger side manifold or anything?
Well.. it took more like 2.5 - 3 hrs to do... we chatted for a bit too and let the car cool down... but yeah.. I though ti twas quicker but thinking back my tech pulled it apart while I was busy answering phones etc... then we put it back together and I thought it was easier.. ha ha I may have to look to charge a little more... My wife told me "you should charge some more as it took longer and its time away form your kids etc"... Basically you remove the oxygen sensor form the manifold, then you undo the the manifold from the engine, undo the manifold from the up-pipe and remove the whole thing in one peice... then you remove your DP.... cause there is 2 nuts under that which hold the up-pipe to the turbo which you cant undo easy if the DP is on... then undo your UP-pipe... you also need to loosen the passenger side engine mount nut so you can lift the engine about an inch... (gives more room to remove U-P..) then you do it all in reverse.... I DONT KNOW how people do this on jack stands and their back.. but I guess thats why they say it takes them 5 hr that way... so yeah the cost may be up a little.. but not too much to keep it fair... and to be a nice guy...
What do you mean by "the cost may be up a little.." ??? And you listen to your wife??? :? JK. I'll call you when I decide to let it fly.
Ok, initial reaction is that the car is friggin' loud! ....but that's because the gasket between the DP and the cat section of my TXS stealthback litterally crumbled apart when I took the two sections apart. As a result, I have a major leak there until I can find a new 3" gasket. Also, I forgot to re-tighten (and completely forgot 1 of the 3 bolts ) the large turbo bracket on the driver's side of the turbo. Am I going to be ok just leaving this the way it is, or would it be a good idea to fix this problem this weekend -- I'll have to take of the f&*)*^g turbo (again!) to do this. Any ideas?
yeah... should have paid me money and had NO leaks... ha ha ha ha glad ya got it done.. but I would fix them leaks sooner than later
Uppipes and turbos are a few of the mods you should stay sober to install. JK. Just don't have a lead foot too much until you tighten things up in there.
bump..... have decided $100 should be a good rate.. I ummed and aaahed about it for a few days but after seeing another store is qouting $230 to install one I think that is a sweet deal.. not as sweet as what Boddah27 got but that is life
hehehehehe... I could have paid eleventy billion dollars for the install, but it wouldn't have changed the fact that my DP to midpipe gasket was completely fried out. I've got a new gasket on its way from TurboXS and plan to take off the turbo (again!) to tighten up the loose bracket this weekend. Other than the loose bracket that I forgot and the cooked midpipe gasket, everything else looks good.
That's the whole point of it for me. I treat this stuff as a hobby to keep me occupied. Maybe I should start skateboarding again. It's a lot cheaper (well, at least until I hurt myself; I'm not 16 anymore).
Whomever it is that PM'd me about the Up pipe install cause you were getting ansy... let me know if you want it done.. as I pms you back tomorrow may work if you get hold of me early enough... sorry deleted pms so forgot who it was... $100 allow about 2-3 hrs of hanging... if 2moro works I may get you in earlier in the day if we arent that busy and get you done earlier so you can race home in traffic..
nope cause you said something about waiting for turbo kit or something?? I cant remember... all I know is it wasnt you
