I just installed a VF-39 and 565 Injectors into my 2005 WRX and whenever I hit max boost...somewhere around 17psi the boost gauge starts to oscillate between about 16 and 19 up and down. I am thinking that this may either be the wastegate arm needing adjustment or maybe my BCS.... any ideas??? I did a search and didnt find anything.
If you still have your TD04, take the airline "T" assembly off and use it on the VF39. THe restrictor pill in the TD04 should fix the problem.... I had this same issue on my VF34 setup. The restrictor pill from the TD04 fixed the problem.
I believe that Justin over at Grimmspeed reused my T assembly. The stock turbo that I got back is bare of any vacuum lines
What type of EM are you running? If it's a custom tune, your tuner sucks. If it's some sort of off the shelf map, make sure that your hardware (ie, restrictor pill diameter, bcs) is EXACTLY the specs required for that map. I can tell you right now that your wgdc map is too high for what you're running. Adding a GM BCS to an off the shelf map designed for the stock BCS will cause this. Using a restrictor pill with a smaller diameter that what an off the shelf map was tuned for will also cause this.
I am using the VF-39/Deatchworks 565/STI top mount on my version 1 access port. I am however running a decent sized FMIC instead of the STI top mount. The map notes did not say anything about changing out the pill like some of the other ones did. I am also on the stock BCS. I was worried that my pill is too small. I am also reusing the stock "T" turbo assembly.
Well there's your problem. The td04 uses a smaller diameter restrictor pill than the vf39 does. The pill is located in the "T" assembly on the compressor side of the "T". Find a vf39 pill and your boost problem should go away.
thanks WOT....I will look for a pill and see how that works out. I guess the question is how dangerous is running the stock pill? I plan on taking it easy as to not overboost until I can get the right pill...should I order directly from subaru? someone probably has one sitting around
The safest route would be to run a short vacuum line from the compressor directly to the wastegate actuator (and thus disabling the bcs) until you get the right pill. Doing so will cause the car to simply run wastegate pressure (depends on the wg spring, but I'm guessing it will be ~ 7-10psi).
For future reference, if you have problems with your car and a shop or person installed the parts, go to them first before you post threads.
this is interesting..like readymix said above, i've used the td04 restrictor pill on other vf3x turbos and it worked perfect. i dont see how this could be different. lots of guys on nasioc do the same thing with no side affects. interesting...
Uh, changing the diameter of the restrictor by even a few thousandths of an inch can have a huge impact. Bottom line is run the correct pill that your OTS map is setup for.
then how is it that many people have run the td04 lines w/pill when they do a 39/30/34 swap and it works properly?
From Cobb's instruction, they said to take the td04 pill and drill it out But other than that, I haven't seen anyone run the stock td04 pill with the vf39, I think that would overboost
Because they either got a custom tune or they are complete morons. I take most things said on Nasioc with a grain of salt.
It does overboost... smaller diameter on the td04 pill... no pill and you are running wastegate pressure... you can ask 1_sic_rex all about that yeah... and apparently if you run both the td04 pill and the vf39 pill on a vf39 swapped wrx with cobb ots map you get upwards of 21 psi... not that I'd know or anything...
Alright well I am getting the STI pill friday and I will try that. If I didn't have a boost gauge or know what to look for I wouldn't have noticed anything so maybe people have been having this issue but just didn't know. This issue in no way reflects Justin's shop...they did an awesome job on the swap. This is totally my error and is a cheap (heck, free) fix
True that!!! Unfortunately judging by Justins comments he wouldn't have had the answer of hand... just one of those situations where it works for some and not for others???? seems like a strange situation... hope the pill solves it all....
oh it will...and if it doesn't I will do what I should have done in the first place.....CUSTOM TUNE!!!!! I just didn't have the $$$ to do it right away
