is it even worth it? will i see much of a gain over a stock td04?

is it worth it for a cheap price?

    tell me what you think

Usually the statement I hear from the WRX guys going from td04 to vf39 is
    "Holy shiet!"
If you can find one in good shape, buy it! If not, 16G.

Lots of people running them. Expect around 250-260whp.

    I hit 260 horsepower, 244 torque.

It feels nice, 16G would be even better but the VF-39 is a really nice turbo for the 2.0L and my 565cc injectors worked just fine.

just make sure there are no cracks on the hotside. If it's in good shape the vf39 is a great turbo for the wrx...they should've came with them in the 1st place.

the 39 is a great turbo for the wrx from what ive read. everyone who does this seems to LOVE what they get. good spool and great power. ive wondered what the difference would be from my VF30 to getting a VF39. because im already getting around 240awhp from the 30 on a pretty non aggressive tune. and id like to get more power with less boost.... running so high really scares me sometimes

The 30 is larger than the 39. The hotside anyway. The 30 is a journal bearing VF34. It sounds like you just need a slightly more aggressive tune.

I just got back from having my vf39 tuned on my 04 wrx wagon and i got 277 hp and 259 torque. I bought the car with the vf39 so I wouldn't know the difference between stock.

It is worth it if you don't want to spend a lot of money. But the supporting mods all cost money, more so than the turbo.

You've seen what an EVO3-16G and VF34 can do. ;)
Get EVO3-16G-8cm. You'll love the top END and spoolup. My setup runs on PUMP GAS BTW.

To add a little to this...

Most of them have hotside cracks, you have to look into the upipe side to see them (where the cracks typically start). It's the one's with a crack that's made it's way to the outside of the exhaust housing you have to be careful with.

Also, even if the crack has made it's way outwards, as long as the crack isn't on or near the wastegate flapper, they usually still make good power and spool.

i hate people saying they like the gains on a 39/34 cuz now im leaning 39 cuz its cheaper than the 16g i want....but i look at a 16g and it'll probably grenade my clutch and tranny anyways....

No, you are incorrect. you have just as much of a risk with the 34/39 as you do with the 16g. don't worry, just don't slam gears like a WRC driver:)

i already have all the supporting mods because i am running e85, i have injectors, fuel pump, exhaust, intake, and fmic.

this is true! i have see what can be done, but i have found a 39 for a super good deal, i am just waiting to hear back on it.
i have always worried about my clutch and tranny but i NEVER slam gears, even when i am doing some spirited driving, i want to preserve my tranny as long as i can lol

i was under the impression that size wise it was 30, 39, 34. wouldnt the 39s larger cold side be better anyways? pushing more air with less exhaust used? id LOOOVE a new tune but i just dont want to break anything on the car with more power. ive already blew a tranny and this one doesnt seem much stronger than the last one.

i cant wait to see what your can do with a bigger turbo! its already pretty badass as it is minus the pig stuck in your scoop ;)

i still think you should get sedan front fenders. there was a thread about one on Nasioc.

Holster you need a catback if you want numbers, my car felt so much more slower when I took my axle back off. Back pressure is your friend trust me, plus your car sounds like ass!

The cold side one the 30, 34 and 39 are all the same. The hot side on the 39 is smaller than both the 30 and 34. The 30 and 34 are the same hot and cold sides, but they have different center sections. I would keep a 30 over a 39. Of course I would skip all the ihi turbo's anyways. The only good thing about the ihi turbo is the cost, but after working on so many cars, I would just buy the good turbo to start with. you will eventually get rid of the ihi turbo and go with something else later.

no, because of the wider fenders, the front bumber is wider on a sedan over a wagon, so to get anything i would have to find a wagon specific lip.

yes this ass sound is well known. i just stopped by DB to ask them for a off the top of their head quote. i have to weld stuff to get my axle back installed so its gonna take some time shopping for a good price.
