I am currently running with a rage 128 all-in-one AGP card in my computer. In order to run duel monitors do I need to get a different card or can I put a PCI card in an empty slot and run with both AGP and PCI cards. My problem is that my current card only has one monitor out. I don't do much 3d gaming or fancy graphics programs or even use the TV in and out on my current card.(side note) OR: Should I invest in a duel head card and put in current card into storage. Anyone have a duel head card that they are not using? I would like to test if possible. Thank you ahead of time for any help you might provide. Matt
Adding a pci card will work, but I've had better luck with dual head cards since both monitors can be run exactly the same. And you can probably buy an ok dual head card for about the same price as a pci card. I personally like ATI dual head cards better than nVidia. At work I have two identical 19in monitors, so I like to be able to run them with the exact same resolution, refresh rate and colors as close to the same as possible. If you have two different video cards, they might not be able to run the same specs, especially if it's a cheap pci card. But, if your second monitor is different, you might not notice the difference in video card capabilities anyway. One tip, a lot of dual head cards have one analog and one dvi output. If you end up using a dvi to analog adapter, get a good quality one, cheap ones result in fuzzy text.
Good info. Thanks, Any suggestions on card types? I know you said ATI, but like model. Please remember I don't need top of the line.
I'm using a Radeon 7000 and it works fine for 2d stuff. I'm not sure if you can even buy that old of a card anymore. I just looked at Nano's site quick and I think this is the one I'd go for. You can always ask the people at the store what they'd recommend too, they're pretty good and they sometimes have stuff in stock that's not on the webpage. http://www.nanosys1.com/vid-pc-r92l-lc3.html If you're running analog monitors, you'll need one dvi to vga adapter for that as well, Nano sells those too, just stay away from Belkin.
thread hijack... What do I need to be able to capture from a vcr into my computer...??? I have: AMD Athlon(tm) XP2400+, 2.01Ghz, 512Mb Ram Nvidia GeForce FZ5700Le Syncmaster 173s 17in Flat LCD (monitor) ????? help
You need some type of video input. You can check and see if your video card has any port on the back labeled video-in. Probably an rca jack. But I'm guessing it's not going to have that. So, you need to get a video capture card, or they also make USB2 video capture devices. You don't need a full tv tuner card, but most of them do have video in besides RF (double check though) and they're pretty cheap these days. You can go nuts on the high end of video capture. I like nano, so here's the link to their page, but yeah, you can probably find cheaper prices for any of these at other online sources. http://www.nanosys1.com/video-tv-tuner-capture-cards.html

I've got a PNY GeForceFX 5600 Ultra sitting around doing nothing that I have used to run two analog displays pretty easily from the latest drivers. It will support one DVI monitor if you're looking to that route but it won't support two DVI devices. But if you aren't running more than one LCD display at a time it'll work great for you. I can even install it and get it running for you if you need me to.
