My wife leased a VW passat from Burnsville Volkswagon and a couple of days ago it broke down on the side of 35W on her way home from work. It had 584 miles on it!! They got it towed and called her back and said that it blew a head gasket and something happened to one of the pistons(she couldn't remember what he said) so there was potential for metal shavings so they have to replace the entire engine. And with jumping through all of the hoops for VW corporate to make sure it isn't a flaw in the engine design that would cause a recall she hased to wait atleast two weeks to get it back. That is an insanely low amount of miles for something like this to happen so I figured I would share.
They better have given her something while she was waiting! Seems like everyone is cheaping out these days.
It is a lease so they do free maintenance for the length of the loan, they also are giving her a free set of snow tires for it. And she has a VW Jetta for her loaner car while they fix it. So they are doing a good job of taking care of it for her and taking care of her as well.
Yeah 09 WRX's are blowing up at the same mileage, I agree with Eli. Or it could be something over looked, I wonder how many Passat's have had issues? From the NASIOC thread there is over 30 blown WRX motors, one guy even had two blown within 5400 miles ... YIKES!!!
Doesnt suprize me, Luckily it didnt start on fire, for shame putting a loved one in a newer then markII jetta. (but passat) re-think your lease, at least they are treating her right! The wrxs are spinning rod bearings and knocking, not breaking down on the side of the road.
From the sounds of it this hasn't been a common thing with the Passats. They were as surprised as she was they are going to take so long to fix it. So they can document everything that went wrong on it. And yes, I was trying to get her into a WRX wagon but being as she is a sucker for a deal she went in to VW and it was the last day of their sign and drive event. They payed her down payment and her first months lease payment as well as all maintenance for the lease length. And she still has another car she is leasing until June (she paid that lease off with her refund). She didn't listen to my advice and now she regrets it but oh well. Can't change the past and it is her who hased to use it.
Less issues with those. I know the longitudinal ones have some oil pump issues, but don't know if the transverse ones do. The 3.6 crap.
Was it VW that used 3 or 4 different engine designs in one model year of car? mainly because they all sucked and exploded right away.
Not sure on that one. I do know that my wife has had two other VW's before this one (05' Beetle and 02' Cabrio) and they were both garbage. I don't know why she went back again.
i had issues with my vw product as well (audi a4 1.8t) not HUGE mechanical issues but it was just a pita, if i own another audi it'll be a new s6
i had a corrado and did 190,000+ mi including numerous track events at Road Americs and Brainerd with no problems All these new wrx's blowing is really something guess i'll keep the old sti
You mean like the cobalt SS TC that has the fastest FWD time around the 'ring? No VW car since 2006 has had that.
At least tehy did something for hte better. I was under a Passat on a lift, saw that and said WTF? This is supposed to be a nice car...
Well, the wife finally got her car back yesterday. They said that the piston had busted through the top of the engine and they couldn't tell me if it was because of a default in the metal they use or what. So they replaced the entire engine and, for having her wait so long, gave her a brand new set of VW rims with Michelin snow tires. I haven't looked to see what kind of Michelins they are but the value on her service worksheet said that the set with the tires came to $3352 which isn't a bad deal to get for free when you were only without your car for a couple weeks. The service manager also said that no one at VW corporate had seen that happen to any other engine of theirs either on an old car or a new one. As a side note, I did this to an old Pontiac 6000 when I was 16. It sounded like someone was inside of my engine bay hitting the inside of my hood with a sledge hammer!!
yeah...i just found out that audi is pretty much sharing with VW...I thought audi was a reliable vehicle...but making twice timing belt change and other crab on top of that....gas killer and leaking from left to right, growing cancer on my walet for repair and parts....luckily i did all the labor myself when i fixed my damn audi...
Sounds like they went the extra mile to make it right with the wife. You know what they say, crap happens. At least they were on the ball and took care of it., and you.
Yeah, after the treatment she got I definately have a new respect for their dealership. Her sales lady went and picked her up on the side of the road when her car broke down and then the free rims and tires. I wouldn't think too many places would be giving that kind of stuff away to show that they were sorry you had to go through the car troubles.
Eh, they don't share much apart from the basics of the engine (even the 2.0Ts aren't exactly the same) and some minor part sharing on minor parts. With the exception of the A3 (which is a GTI/R32) and the older Passat (1998-2005 passat was the same as the 1996-2001 Passat except with a longer floor and exterior bits) Which dealer? I'm guess Schmelz. If it is westside, I'll be shocked.
