Hi all, I read a thread similar to this on a national forum but figured I'd ask the local community for their thoughts on the matter. I recently purchased a 2012 WRX sedan but was dead set on the hatchback for eight straight months while I was looking. When the realization of purchasing a sedan came into view I turned to the only thing I know for answers- the internet. From there I found many different opinions and beliefs as to why people chose the body style they did. When push came to shove and it was time to write the check, ultimately the limited package swayed my decision more so over the body style of the car but I did end up taking a liking to the sedan by that time anyways. Nevertheless, it was an on-going battle to decide which I liked more in the end, the hatch or sedan. I'm sure I will never fully come to peace with an answer. I'm curious to know why you all chose the body style you did. Sure, it may have been the only option at the time, but did functionality, luxury, comfort or looks ever take precedence in your decision?
I've had hatchbacks and sedans before. Not all particularly subies but when it came to the wrx I enjoyed the body style of the sedan a little bit more than having a hatchback. I have a 4th gen wrx and am happy with it so far. Everyone does have their own opinion though.
I found my wagon online one night whilst browsing autotrader. I had no actual plans to buy a car at the time, but fell in love immediately. Why wagon? Space, utility, and it's just so damn good looking.
Fixed. Hatch - I have had both in cars. I don't require one or the other but the space is what sold me. I have used my hatch space and I am glad that I went the way that I did. It is perfect for hauling tires to the track + all my other gear. Also use the space for going on road trips (prior to our SUV). I like the look of the older sedans... but the hatch just made more sense.
I bought a sedan because it was the only option at the time and I wanted a WRX. I don't regret buying it, but more times then not wish I had a hatch for the utility/space aspect. Some things just aren't meant to be hauled in a 4 door sedan. As far as the trim package goes, I have the basic. Ideally I would have liked fog lights and a moon/sun roof, but those are luxuries and not necessities!
Well I'm up to 3 wagons/hatches now. Ironically, I used to hate Subaru's in general because I thought they were lesbian cars. Then I started liking WRX sedans but still hated the looks of the wagon. When I started searching for my first WRX, I discovered that the seats did not fold down in the older sedans. After I discovered the additional space and utility of the wagon, I changed my search to wagons only and ended up with one. When I was looking for my new "fun" car after selling the 1st saabaru, I wanted a rwd coupe with a decent amount of power. I got sucked back into Subaru and originally wanted an 06/07 STI. Then I discovered the additional (much needed at 6'6") leg room of the 08+ STI and the lower loan interest rates on the 08+...low and behold, I ended up with another "practical" hatch for my very impractical fun car.
I race bikes and needed a way to transport bikes, spare wheels, bags etc... I can fit the same amount of stuff in my Hatch as I could in my Audi Q5 SUV And besides, it looks better than a sedan
I bought a hatch because I didn't want someone else to get it. But I have had a '02 sedan but wanted a hatch but all the dealer thought their hatches were made of gold... But I like my hatch for the look, space, the grocery getter look.
I wanted a WRX wagon/hatch super bad, mainly because I'm an outdoorsman, and wanted the extra room to haul camping/fishing/hunting gear. My wife hated the looks of them, but one night I found the 06 wrx limited sedan I have now, and my wife basically begged me to get it because she liked the way it looked. I still wish I had gotten a wagon, but I love my car. And now I have an excuse to drive my 87 GL wagon more, and my wife absolutely hates that's thing lol
always thought that i wanted a hatch until i walked into the dealer and the only hatch they had was silver... this would have been a 3rd silver car in the row. also didn't help that i was extremely underwhelmed with trunk space in the hatch (not that sedan is any better) and the wife thought the hatch is hideous - which to some extent i agree - the thing looks like a shoe. so ended up with the sedan.
when i was buying my WRX, it was the GD era... so the items that made me go sedan over wagon was 1. More fender room for tires 2. less weight. Done.
Wagons are cooler, my last two were wagons, and if my current one came in a wagon , I would have bought it as well.
For WRX/ STI I like the recent years (2008+) in a hatch better, but before that I like the sedan body. For LGTs it's wagon mafia all the way.
There's definitely the stealth factor. Much like the Spanish inquisition, no one suspects a wagon. Not to mention it seems that the legacies in general get less attention because they are more "responsible" looking. The WRX and STi have a well known reputation as a "boy-racer" car, while the legacy never caught on as well as a tuner car, capabilities aside. Add the wagon factor on top of that, and you become nearly invisible to law enforcement and the goading ricers as well
I went with a 2 door 2 seater convertible because i dont need extra seats, cargo space, or practicality. I have an SUV for that.
Add stickers, aftermarket wheels, and an obnoxious exhaust and you instantly become very visible to law enforcement haha ok, I'm done clowning on you in this thread.
after having a sedan, i wanted a wagon for rear seat folding. a pass through just wouldn't cut it. slightly less noticeable in the wagon.
My sedan was an unloved, leftover '05 sitting on the showroom floor in February of '06 and was marked down more than $6000 from sticker. The stepdaughter was a senior that year and a third car was going to be needed very soon, so it was sort of an impulse buy based on the fact it was a very attractive deal.
I never considered the sedan when I ordered my 2012 WRX. It's not that I have anything against the sedan but I much prefer the looks of the hatch. The utility was also a factor, albeit a very small one. I also like having something a bit "different" for lack of a better word. Not that hatches are that unusual in the Subaru world but when you look at cars in general in the US, the vast VAST majority are sedans. When I see a Mercedes, BMW, or CTS wagon, I nearly get whiplash. Love the look. The sedans? You see so many of them they're nearly invisible. It's obviously very subjective and comes down to personal taste and patience. I was in no hurry and hatches were non-existent on dealer lots so I ordered exactly what I wanted, a base model. I've had enough sunroof-equipped cars to know that I wouldn't miss it and it was certainly not something I'd pay extra for. Same goes for fog lights. I can't remember the last time (if ever) I needed to use fog lights, although plenty of people use (mis-use) them all the time. Sorry, that last one is a pet peeve of mine.
All the stickers have been gone for months... wheels are pretty much a nonfactor due to aftermarket wheels being so common, and as for the exhaust, well, at least I didnt remove my mufflers... like you did.
Just purchased my first subaru and had to go with the wagon for the simple fact of how sexy they are. Sporty Sedans are a dime a dozen if you ask me. Theres something to be said about a turbo 5 speed wagon that has the capabilitie to leave grandpas vette begging for mercy. Theres not another car in the world that would make me as happy as my wagon does. All stock for now, ray
I went with my 97 Impreza Outback Wagon for it's utility. I tow with it, carry lots of stuff in the cargo area and can still cart my family around in it. During the winter I fill the back with cones, drive out to my favorite frozen lake with a few friends, setup a course and run all day.
Hatch all the way. Excluding my last car (bought specifically to learn to mod cars), I went from a 2-seat convertible to an SUV. The car couldn't haul more than a golf bag and the SUV wasn't going to cut it on the track, so I went with the STi hatch. I've hauled scrap metal to race tires and as soon as the junk is out of the trunk, she hauls ass.
