In my early 20's I had a Volvo 850R. I sure won a lot of drag races against people who weren't trying to race, and surprised a lot of senior citizens with my quickness off the line. I really like the Forester XT and part of it is because it doesn't look like a quick car. But then again, anyone who knows cars will always know what to look for, right? Sounds, the look of high flow exhaust, wheels and tires etc. Is an advantage of the sleeper possibly getting less tickets? I had an 02 and an 09 WRX hatch, and this also might be a rant about no 2015 WRX hatch. I liked the performance with the utility of the hatch style. Yes, anyone who knows anything will look for "WRX" logos or be able to spot a Focus ST, even if these cars are de-badged they can be spotted. Somehow the hatch still seems less obvious. Am I missing the point here? Not looking for a specific "right" answer, just curious why others like non-obvious performance cars, or maybe think the idea is dumb. Thx!
I am not sure if you are looking for a group hug and for everyone to tell you no it's not lame, but it's your choice. Don't be worried if people feel what you drive is lame unless they are willing to pay for it. A sleeper or not, you get less tickets by obeying the law,old people get pulled over too. Unless you are driving a yellow Ferrari attention isn't going to just flow your way because it's a sporty looking car. Are you trying to buy a new car? I guess I am not understanding the point of the thread.
For a sleeper car on the street, yup, I think that's silly. If you're driving around like an ass hat, you're going to get pulled over whether its a rice bomb or a buick. ...ok, maybe it's a little entertaining On the track on the other hand...I'm all for sleepers. It was fun chasing down people in my stock, quiet, STI. "Who's driving that god damn subaru, and how is it so fast??" -quote from the old dude at BIR in his Mercedes AMG SL55 convertible.
Yes, I think I'm looking for a new car. My opinion for a long time is that the WRX was a great, and possibly the only, reasonably priced AWD car with some peformance. I say "was" because the prices have gone up and the styling is changing too. I think my '02 was around 20k but I am not accounting for inflation. The group hug might be needed for me to get over it and buy a new car and quit missing the old days. Having a sleeper is simply, fun.
The 03 WRX wagon was 23,500 when I was looking at them. The sedan was a few hundred more. And if you want fewer tickets, don't drive like an entitled butthole. I drive a bright red 350z roadster with gold wheels that have deep shiny rim lips on them. I've driven it for 2 years. I have never gotten a ticket in it. I loaned it to Ryan on here for a week, and within a 3 days he had earned a speeding ticket. You can drive flashy cars and not get tickets or attention, it's easy...just don't drive like an asshole.
I didn't say there was anything wrong with them. But wanting a 'sleeper' so you can drag race geriatrics and other fast-and-furious morons on the streets without getting tickets is the most asswipe reason to want a 'sleeper.'
I have an '04 with a VF39 and AT. It is great for a daily driver, and has plenty of power for my purposes.
I'm guessing my 05 LGT with no rear wing is sleepy enough. Nothing to attract attention but the intercooler scoop and even that is smoother than on other Subaru cars.
