I bought a silver 2004 STI from a little car lot in shorewood called Tonka Bay Auto, just wondering if someone on the site owned it? I ask because it has a bunch of stuff done to it but the dealership wasn't sure of the mods. I know it has a bigger turbo, bigger intercooler, loud ass bov, cold air, Invidia down pipe to espelir exhaust, an aftermarket clutch and i'm guessing some sort of tune since it had an accessport owners manuel in the glove compartment. The thing goes like a raped ape, just wondering about any background on the car, timing belt, fuel system mods etc etc. http://i994.photobucket.com/albums/af62/blown87gt/sti001.jpg http://i994.photobucket.com/albums/af62/blown87gt/sti003.jpg http://i994.photobucket.com/albums/af62/blown87gt/sti004.jpg http://i994.photobucket.com/albums/af62/blown87gt/sti002.jpg
Was Manuel ok? Welcome to the site. Also, an underhood shot might help some of us identify who owned it before you. I don't remember those wheels locally, but I may remember the mods if it is an 04.
I would also strongly recommend a tune if you got it from that dealer, when I was talking to them before it seemed like they like the idea of just tossing on parts and beating the piss out of them. I'd also double check the car's history, seeing as they were trying to sell a JDM STi and saying it was road legal as is.
I think you're thinking of Minnetonka Imports or whatever they were calling themselves. Tonka Bay Auto is VW/AUDI
Manual haha, oops! And I'll get a motor pic tomorrow and post it. And all the mods were done when they got the car and they said it had "some sort of tune" but I still think I'm gonna contact nuke and have him work his magic on it. It seems to run fine but I'd just like to know it was tuned properly for peace of mind if nothing else. Also, the check engine light does keep coming on and the scan tool says it's running rich on bank 1, bad oxygen sensor?
well pic two made it look like it was next door to the gas station and across from truffle hill, the fire station, and the bowling alley and stuff... if that's the case, same place, different name.
If they said "some sort of tune", there is an AP manual in the glovebox and you did not get an AP with the car, you may be in for a huge headache. You can't touch the ECU if it was married to an AP.
tuner and/or shop. getting it looked at by someone competent and knowledgeable will tell you everything you need to know about it... which is what condition it's in, what the actual mods are, and what you need to do next based on your goals for the car. your chances of a reliable/fun car are better starting there then the remote chance of someone here recognizing it, which could still happen. but even so, that does nothing for you in regards to it's current condition. get it checked out. before driving it like a monkey. and THEN... have fun with your new car!!
Oh yeah I do plan on having someone look at it, problem is I live in Hibbing which is 3 1/2 hours north of the twin cities so it makes it kinda hard to get time to do it. I just thought maybe someone would recognize the car or maybe even the prior owner posted on here etc etc. As far as goals for the car, as long as the tune is safe where it's at the car is done. It's just my dd/winter car.
i hear you, thanks for the update on location. yeah i hope someone recognizes the car, but first i sincerely hope you'll make an appointment asap with someone who knows there stuff. i know how it is, i'm overdue for my new purchase inspection and i live very close to one of the best shops around. (just got an 07 stage 2 wrx) just please find someone locally to look at it. there are a good number of people up duluth way that have YEARS of experience with these cars and can spot problems before you lift the hood. and there are a LOT of mistakes that are made modding these cars. get it done now. save yourself the headache. that's all i'm saying.
Makes perfect sense, all though I will say I have a feeling this was done up right due to the fact that it runs great, idles perfect, no hiccups or anything. I still plan on getting it checked out though.
This might be the guy that replaced me at my room mate's place... he had those fugly wheels on his Silver STI but as far as I know it was pretty much stock with exhaust/tune
runs great, idles perfect... these are a start. but does the car pull timing due to knock in a certain rpm range? does it run lean? does the oil contain trace amounts of your failing bearings? any of these things could lead to engine failure in <1,000 miles. ask anyone on here. the fact that the car starts, purrs like a kitten, and pulls your teeth from their sockets doesn't mean anything to a knowledgeable tech. don't rely on your gut for everything is all i'm saying. and i should really listen to my own advice too.
Yup that was his old car. He only had it for a couple months and got rid of it. His dad owned a little dealer in hopkins and they bought it at an auction. They had no idea on the mods or tune done to it and it looks the same as it did when he had it.
I drive past that dealer every time i go to my parents. Was wondering if someone on here was gunna pick that thing up. Clean looking car.
Haha I agree totally on the wheels! I hate em! They'll work for winter wheels though, and I'll go snap a shot of the motor now and post it shortly. The car is mint though, only flaw is on the drivers door pillar. Looks like someone locked the keys in the car and had to pry on it, two dimples in the trim.
Here's a couple pics of the motor, sorry for the crappy quality, iphone pics. http://i994.photobucket.com/albums/af62/blown87gt/sti002-1.jpg http://i994.photobucket.com/albums/af62/blown87gt/sti001-1.jpg http://i994.photobucket.com/albums/af62/blown87gt/sti003-1.jpg
Would he know any background on the car then? I'm just wondering about stuff like timing belt and fuel system mods. I know it has a bigger turbo but I dunno how much a stock sti fuel system can handle.
Neoz and Flat4 both suggested the same, dude didn't really know what was going on with the car, he had picked it up in an auction and apparently sold it shortly after. When I briefly talked to him I don't think he knew much of anything about the car.
That is the car I built for the original owner who traded it in. I know all the history of the car as well as all the mods.
I would definitely be careful beating on it, even though Joe only owned it for a short time, I saw him drive it and he worked the clutch like a loose prostitute and beat on it like Rihanna. So who knows what condition it's in.
Well in his defense with the clutch, it is very tricky. Not sure what brand it is but it must be a NASCAR clutch or something haha, it's either on or off, no in-between.
The first thing you should do is replace the front O2 and reset the ECU. intercooler: Perrin Intake: Perrin big maf Turbo: SBR 20G Injectors: IIRC they are 850 reds? Tune was done by Jorge on a V1 AP with a pump map and a 110 oct map I don't have all the details in front of me but the heads were rebuilt the last time I worked on the car. I would have to check the receipt to see all of what I did.
Yeah the check engine light keeps coming on and it says it's running rich on bank one so the must be cuz of the O2 sensor. Thanks for the info though I appreciate it.
If the code is 171 or 172 the sensor is working but there is a leak in the system. No need to replace the sensor do a boost leak test and find out where the leak is.
I do believe it was 171 yes, I'll search for a boost leak then. I tried calling rs three times today but nobody ever answered, I'd like to get as much info as possible on the car, dyno numbers and stuff like that. Any idea if the timing belt has been changed?
It says on their site that they're open 10-4 on Saturday's, heck it even said it on their answering machine haha.
Yeah sorry we are closed on the weekends. Just have not updated the site and the phone. Call on Monday and I will try and answer your questions. Matt
Car looks good. I saw it a few weekends ago and I was like **** if that was for sale when I was looking. But I love my black 05 so its all good.
A few of my friends wanted that car, but i was the only one amongst them to own a sti so they've asked me to come along. So i got the chance to check out that car twice . First time at BT, a younger guy was trying to sell it. Then again at tonka bay where the guy claims "his" brother was the one selling it at BT. Anyways, last time i started it up, it had a weird clicking noise from the engine bay at ide. It wasnt just the normal boxer rumble. Is it still doing that?
