Hey guys, I've just upgraded to a stage 2 setup (TurboXS Stealthback + STi axleback) and reflashed to Cobb's stage 2 93 octane base map on my accessport. Here's the thing -- I'm noticing this light tapping noise during partial throttle and mid-boost (~7 psi), with the sound going away under full boost and throttle. From what I've read, this sounds more like wastegate flutter, and not the dreaded detonation. I've tightened my wastegate 1.5 turns in, and have noticed that the noise isn't quite as pronounced now -- but I can still hear it. I'm going to try and test a few different maps tomorrow to see if the sound comes and goes for further investigation into this. I've already tried the 91 octane realtime map, and am getting the same noise. Anyways, it would be nice to get a second opinion on this from somebody who's at stage two or has at least had some experience with this. A ride-along would be nice to check it out. So, if anyone wants to possibly get together this weekend to help give me any input, that would be cool. I live in the Minnetonka/Eden Prairie area, btw. Tom
First off, I would get rid of the 93 map and run the 91 map. Remember, our summer gas is as bad or worse than most places winter gas. Russ

I ran the Blue Earth one time, and I will never run it again. Any fuel that has the word "Earth" in the name is probably going to make your turbo car run like ass. I pumped a tank and within 15 minutes the ECU pulled timing, I thought the car was going to die right there. I limped out that tank of gas and went back to the BP station. Yeah, and as a rule of thumb for fuels and AP maps: *Always run the AP map with an octane rating that is one point below the highest octane fuel at the pump* Meaning...if the pump says 92 octane, you should be running 91, if the pump says 93...since you don't have a 92octane map, you should be running 91. You never run a 93 octane map on 93 octane gas. The 93 octane maps should be used with at least 94 octane gas.

I have used it exclusively in my RS since '99. I was also using it exclusively in the STi until I heard that it takes out timing. However, I have noticed ZERO difference when using Amoco 92. Maybe it is due to the stock state of tune? Where does it say that the ethanol content is any higher than elasewhere? They market it as low sulphur, not high ethanol. I looked at the site and they don't mention the ethanol content. Christian

Yes, I spent too much time in a few refineries. Well I guess it does decress sulfur by dilution.... But the sulfur content in gas is so low to start with that it would be a stupid thing to do. I think I said something to this effect on one other ethonal thread. The short of it is People are stupied and when you say it is good for one type of gas (diesel) it must be good for all right?....[xx(]. Chin - read their info. It is high ethonal. Blue planet my a$$. This was origionaly about Toms waste gate or detonation problem. Try stage 1 map.... noise go away... Stage 2 at 91 oct... noise go away... Remember even though it is an instantanious flash it take a few for it to reset advance and all.

I flashed from a 93 oct base map to a 91 base map today, and I'm still getting the sound under partial throttle at around 7 psi of boost. I even tried running the stock map, and got the sound. I'm betting that it's my wastegate -- I've tightend the actuator arm, and that seemed to reduce the noise. Still, I'd like to know that I'm completely safe.... Speaking of Blue Planet gas, that's what I've been running. I used it when I was at stage 1 with a 93 oct map, and had no knock issues that I could notice. Regardless, I'm going to try and switch to a different fuel. I'll doubt I'll be able to find any 93 by my house, so I'll probablly end up running 92. What is a good fuel? Mobil? Amaco?

grimm, what did you do at the plant? i lived right next to hess st. croix for a while, they had replaced the cat crackers w/ fractional dist. systems, then found out that the cat crackers are are actually alot more efficent... my step father was on one of the emergency response teams that would get called up at 4 in the morning when something bad happened... although you didnt need a phone call, the plant wide alarm was about 150 yards from our trailer..

I worked on BP and a Shell (formaly equilon, shell and some one else) in L.A. I am a environmental engineer, so I was intrested in the processing side too, because the changes that we were making was for the clean fuels act on diessil. I actualy do a few things for Marithon, but it isn't like being there and realy checking things out. Now I just do paperwork stuff for them on and off. It was fun being there at night when something would screw up... 50 - 100 foot flames coming out of the flare stack. Just like day at 1 am. A lot of them want to replace the catlyst systems because... well that stuff will kill you dead so fast you don't even know it by the time you hit the ground. Also the boom factor when something goes majorly wrong. The one at shell blew out about 1/4 mile and set fire slightly larger than that. Bad stuff, but cool looking. Fractional Distilution systems work on a heat process (not to say the cat doesn't generate a bit o heat), and are not "activly" breaking off the carbon chains, hence less efficency.... slight bit safer but way more processing time, and initial energy input to the system to break the chains off.
quote:
quote:
Originally posted by Grimm http://www.mnsubaru.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1306&SearchTerms=gas,stations here is a link to the non ethonals that matt put together.

Just so you know, that is all my work (lists and maps). I kept the database and shapefiles on my work computer, so if new addresses come to light, let me know and I'll update.
