I drive a 2006 STi. During 2nd gear with I Full Throttle it sometimes it will make this high pitch noise like a supercharger kind of. So far all I know is my clutch is going because it's making clutter noises can it be just that?
Isn't this a fairly common noise inherent in STi trannys because of their bulletproof design? (Think WRC tranny noise) Here's an article I found on another board which may also be helpful... http://www.turbomagazine.com/features/0305tur_subaru_wrx_gear_set/index.html
WRC tranny noise comes from the gear teeth being cut straight intstead of at angles. The STi 6speed is not straight cut, it is helical. The WRC transmission is of a completely different design to the roadgoing passenger versions of the Impreza. In short, your car shouldn't be buzzing or howling, take it in for service.
Granted the STi tranny does not have a straight-cut setup like a rally car, but there is the matter of degree. The STi gears are going to be at a much straighter angle than your typical Honda civic, hence many STi owners experience a 'whine' sound with their tranny. But for peace of mind, I agree, go and get it checked out under warranty.
well the thing is they arent going to put it under warrenty IF i ask them to go FULL Throttle on 2nd gear to hear the noise! Becuz thats the only time u can hear it
Strange, I figured this would be why it wouldn't be warrantied: http://mnsubaru.com/forums/showthread.php?p=311590#post311590 http://mnsubaru.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15658 http://www.mnsubaru.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15620
Yea they will... you need to go full throttle to merge sometimes or to get on the freeway.... you best sounds in exhaust in second
Please stop making things up and pulling **** out of your ass. The STi gear teeth sit at pretty much the same angle as every other manual helical gearset that is in every other Subaru. Below is a quiz. Which pic is from an STi, and which pic is the standard gears for all other Subaru manual transmissions. Hint...the STi one is the one that has a 'much straighter angle that many STi owners have.' Centerline on both have been marked by the red line. Also, the gears pictured are not the same gear...meaning, they both aren't 2nd gear or anything like that. Just a pic of two different gears from two different trannys...
hahaha well still hahaha pretty sure everyone here has got things under warrenty that they shouldnt have done
Yeah dude I drive a STi ... its Turbo...300hp and 300tq and the owner is expected to not ever go on BOOST or use the turbo hahahha now thats funny. yeah its just all show the spoiler isnt for anything...YEAH TOTALLY UNDERSTANDABLE
No mostly everyone on here is able to fix on there own, or is able to get help with out posting about it... Just go to the dealer on monday that is all.
Yeah, but the owner is expected to shift the transmission properly and use the clutch correctly. And the car is NOT built to be launched repeatedly, and the car was NOT built to have the clutch sidestepped at 5000rpms so you can run 12.9 sec 1/4mile times. The transmission is strong, but it isn't bulletproof. Things break when they aren't used for their intended purpose. The STi was never at any point in time built to run down the dragstrip. And the fact that you articulate yourself like a complete idiot on the forums makes your attempt at a snide comment towards Brian Shorten, null and void.
Here's where the problem is. Your warranty covers normal wear and tear and manufacturing defects. It's not a race sponsorship. There are plenty of guys running around with modded cars and doing all sorts of motorsports events and they're not having transmission issues. What's that telling you? You'll be bringing in a car with a blued flywheel and worn clutch with 2nd gear issues with less than 20k miles. That's not going to scream abuse to any technician or service rep. (Note the careful use of sarcasm there) Like I said, there are plenty of us running around with modified cars that see driving events. Guess what? We've learned one thing. You pay to play. What does that mean? We understand and take responsibility that if something happens that's related to what we were doing it's on us and not Subaru. If you were out drag racing and you had a window regulator go out, that'd be one thing. But you yourself have said that you learned to drive stick on this car, then you've been out drag racing it a few times. Now you've got a slipping clutch and your 2nd gear is making noise? Yeah, that's your bad and not Subaru. Why should they be on the hook because you can't drive? You do realize that people from Subaru routinely read these boards, right? It really makes us look good when you can't take responsibility for your own actions and try to hide behind a warranty. Not to mention it drives up the price of the vehicles AND makes it harder for someone with a LEGIT claim to get it covered. Thanks.
^^^haha, truth. yeah, i had never read some of those previous threads. if i hadnt, i would've screemed bring it in and make them deal with it, but at this point, i would say your best bet would be bring it to a tranny shop and deal with it
i get what u mean but enjoying ur 300 hp/tq doesnt mean launching at a drag strip.. why would u even want a timeslip out of a stock sti.. could just go with some1 elses times and call it a day with going round a circut track or 40 roll runs on highway so u dont run into launching problems..
Yeah, and then you'd be asking the following questions: "My clutch is going bad. How can I get it warrantied?" "My transfer case exploded. Shouldn't it hold up under a launch?" "Some guys with Mitsubishi shirts on were looking at my car, it looked like they were writing down my VIN? What were they doing?" Here's an idea. Learn how to drive. Go to a driving school and take some lessons. Make sure the car is getting the most out of you and not the other way around.
If you can afford a new STi, you can afford to fix it when you break it. This sort of reminds me of a time an Twin-Turbo RX-7 came into a Mazda dealership with a 10 gal nitrous tank behind the seats. His apex seals had died within the first 20,000 miles... I wonder why... Also reminds me of the fact that Lotus Elise drivers cover their plates and VIN tags while at the track for the same reasons. Racing=void warranty. You didn't buy a race car, you bought a street car. /rant.
There is a difference between owning a car and being able to afford a car. When you're out racing and try to hide behind a warranty, you may own the car but you can't afford it.
yeap. a 17 yr old with an sti. spoiled and still in highschool. how much better and more dangerous can you get?
