About this? This is my first turbo car so I really dont know what to look for now. Just got off the phone from the place thats rebuilding my stock turbo and the guy says he doesn't think it's bad. He told me I better look at other things before spending the money on this. So whatelse is there to look at? I changed the pcv valve, plugs have been changed and a were not black. Car runs great. Only smokes at low speed or stopped, does not smoke on the highway, clears right up when it gets out on the highway.

Anything else I should be looking at?

    It's blueish and using oil

It smokes out the exhaust so bad that you can't see behind it and it does it when it's at idle or comming off it. When it's on the highway it stops smoking. It's using oil now cause it's blowing it out the exhaust. Cant post any pictures because car is in my garage with the turbo off in the shop. The exhaust wheel on the turbo is NOT oily. If you were to compare it to a spark plug color, it's about the light brown that you want your plugs to look like which by the way mine do. I can't find a reason for this. If I had a broken ring I would think it would keep smoking and not clear up at highway speed. He hasn't pulled apart the turbo yet to see what it looks like on the compressor side but he says it has no play either direction so he doesn't think it's bad. He said to call him in a day and he will take the compressor side apart and look. He also said something about checking the oil drain. I'm guess thats the hose I had a heck of a time getting the clamp off down by the oil pan. I will run a wire down that fitting tonight when I get home. One other thing I have noticed is my oil dip stick rides about ½ inch out of the tube also. The silver alum intake that connects to the rubber hose is not oily either nor is the butterfly when you look down the intake.

hmm... dont know what blown head gasket looks like on a subaru, but could it be a minor blown head gasket with blueish smoke and using oil? just guess...

It sounds like a crank case ventilation issue. You are blowing the dipstick out of the pipe? That is not good! There are a bunch of things to go through here.

    1) what are your mods?
    2) any oil in the intercooler?
    3) remove TB, any oil pooled in the bottom of the manifold?

Sounds like the car is sucking oil in b4 the intake valves and the car is burning it. As for the plugs not being bad in color, it would take alote of oil to make them look bad.

    well

No mods, car is stock. Oil dipstick rides about ½ inch up in the tube.
Here is what someone else said: By the sounds of whats going on with your car I think the seal is out on the compressor side of the turbo. under vacuume conditions it sucks oil under boost it is probably putting boost into the cranckcase blowing out the dipstick

Guess I better wait and see what he finds in the turbo and just check a few other things while I'm having a beer and swearing at it to night. lol

2.5 swap huh. So just how much faster can I make that car?

If he hasn't pulled the turbo apart yet, he shouldn't have guessed that nothing is wrong with it. I would wait to hear what he has to say. You may also have a blocked vacuum line somewhere, causing excessive crankcase pressure.

Did some more looking into the XT last night,

PVC hoses look clean with some trace of oil and alittle buildup in one.
The alum piece that connects the turbo to the intake has oil in it and the intake has oil in it. I'm thinking the seal in the turbo is bad and when the car comes off acceleration the vacuum is sucking oil past the seal and it smokes. When I step on it the pressure bleeds the other way and my oil dip stick pops to vent. Sounds right to me anyway. Will have to see what the turbo guy says for sure. Car runs to good to have any other issues but you just never know.

I wont do a motor swap. The TD04 I bought showed up from UPS last night and the turbo and pipes look like new. Looks like he may have been running a little rich in the exhaust. lol If I end up having to pull the motor for something worse I will just have it rebuilt. I'm done doing engine swaps, will just upgrade the turbo when I get this figured out and then be done with it.

    Well here is the update

My turbo is all carboned up inside around the bearing and it's not letting the oil drain out fast enough anymore. He said most people run them past this point and then cause lot's of damage. Mine is rebuildable be he says I should just install the other stock one I bought off the net awhile back. He says that looks good. Wants me to bring in my exhaust housing so he can sandblast it and put it back together. So I guess thats the plan for now. Once all my hoses get here I should be able to start putting it back together. wooo wo, I miss driving it.

Lot more fun to drive in the snow because it drifts nice, the SVX just pushes
