ask morganm or chux they seem to be the resident experts on GLs.

how much? Dual range 4WD? look for rust, not so much on the body, but underneath, that's what killed my '85. but if you find an even remotely solid one, you've got a solid offroader, not a fast car, but it'll go places that'll shock the jeep guys! and that's BEFORE a lift }:)

put it this way, if it's even remotely solid, and cheap, and you don't buy it, send me the info. I CALL NEXT DIBS!!!

i guess my big question is; i have a 90 legacy L no turbo 190k miles, so is this an upgrade or a downgrade? the GL is a utah car, has absolutely no rust and looks pretty solid tho i havnt driven it yet 212k miles dual range 4wd. i dont get a chance to offroad much but i do live in duluth during the winters so awd or 4wd is a must, im guessing this is a decent economy car since its fwd and a manual. thanks for the replies so far.

I'd say your first gen Legacy is gonna be more reliable. However the GL is going to have more 'options'. I noticed my '88 GL had more power options and features than my '90 Legacy L wagon did.

What's the asking price on this GL?

actually my legacy seems to have more options like power windows, abs, all disc brakes, maybe the sedans had more options? this GL has crank windows, rear drum. the reason for all of this is because my legacy seems to be falling apart a little and being a college student i dont have the time or money to fix these things. i dunno, i just put new rotors in the rear and now there is a rumbling noise coming from the front when i get going fast. i like to fix my own car, but im getting a little tired of pin pointing things with the suspension. the GL is for $1000 obo must sell, so i figure i can get this guy down quite a bit. just weighing my options here. if i decide against getting the GL ill definately let you guys know. what is the 4wd vs. the awd? i like my legacy a lot, but a new car sounds fun too. this is a dilemma for me. any more suggestions are greatly appreciated.

a rust-free utah car? yea, my '88 was worth that much }:)

anyway, "upgrade" is a relative term, I'd like to have both, for COMPLETELY different reasons. I too live in duluth (UMD...where are you at?) and would totally rather have 4WD in the snow. Basically, the difference is that 4wd doesn't have a center diff, at all. so one less way to lose power, but you can't use it on dry pavement, you'll burn up your transfer case.

AWD, and EJ power is your ticket to on-road fun, D/R 4WD is for nasty conditions, you'd be suprised at how much more snow a 4WD GL can go through than an AWD car.

I still say lowball the guy on the GL. simple car, not as much can go wrong (though the ABS would be nice on that hill...), and when it does, it's an easy fix. AND, a rear disc conversion is EASY, and cheap.

He's on dust if he thinks it's worth $1000. Do a good check on it when you go see it. Get it upto full temp. Test drive on the highway. Ask how much oil it uses (if he says none he's full of ****) Make sure it dont over heat. Check the dipstick and oil fill cap for sludge/milk. Look in the coolant over flow tank for oil/sludge/milk.

A GL with crank windows? Something seems odd here... The GL's I've seen and have are power everything and tons of options. Sure its not a DL?

You wont be escaping problems and maintanace with purchasing ANY car that has 212,000 miles on it.
