I used to use my old 98 LGT with 230xxx miles on it to tow a bike up to BIR. Never had a hiccup with towing, just with a fairly janky hitch setup.
I have a custom 2 inch bolted to my frame. Im getting a 16foot boat but I don't know if the car can handle it
'00 OBS 4eat - Approx 900lb payload. Pulled OK for 300 mile trip home from Milwaukee. Only issue I had was the car kept down shifting upon slight inclines on the freeway. 5spd would have made the trip much easier...
How small of a small boat are you thinking? I pulled my sons quad and trailer with the cab loaded full of camping stuff a few weeks ago. Payload was around 1100. I was actually pretty impressed with how my 11' MT outback sport handled with the trailer and didn't seem to have an issue even off road up hill. I probably wouldn't want to tow much more than that though.
I pulled a two place snowmobile trailer with 2 sleds on board. It might be too much for the brakes. It will tow it fine, but for the WRX I'd say 2,000lbs ought to be the limit. I think it's listed in the owners manual the max weight for towing. It really depends on how far you want to tow it, too. A couple miles or less is one thing, but from Milwaukee to Minneapolis is another thing.
