I was reading some opinions on various intakes and it seems like some of the problems associated with the intakes are based on the air flow sensor not reading correctly. I size up various flow elements for industrial applications all day long at my job so I am trying to understand what method is being used to measure the airflow. Does anyone know? Is it a thermal mass type or more of a pressure based sensor? Is it compensated for density?

IIRC all 2000+ models use a hot-wire mass air flow sensor. Unless they went back to the ultra-touchy hot-film ones from the MY99 Subarus :x

they use both a hot wire MAF, and a Map sensor

What kind of signal do these sensors output?

How do these sensors communicate with the ECU? Is it just a simple voltage or resistance?
