Have been debating what kind of engine oil seems to be the most popular for the Subaru engine. I have been using Shell Rotella T6 synthetic 5W40. Seems to work ok as far as i can tell. my 2010 STI doesn't use any oil. Feel like i should be using a 5W30 even though the car sits in a heated garage. Anyone have any experience with Redline or Motul oil?
Most everyone on here is using the Rotella T6! I've read alot of the "Best Oil Threads", they all seem to say Rotella.
Depends on your use but if you want data (rather than opinions) jump on bobisthoilguy and/or send blackstone labs some samples for analysis.
I've been wondering this too. I have always ran Valvoline dino oil in all my vehicles. But have never had a turbo'd one. Still on the first oil change in my 06 wrx, and at 2200 miles it has burned less than a quart so far. Still undecided if I should try the synthetic out.
I've ran castrol dino, mobil dino, amsoil syn, motul syn, and rotella t6 in my turbo subarus and have sent sample in for analysis on all of them. They are all pretty damn similar. That said, yes I run t6 in the lgt bc its a dd and the oil is cheap and easy to find.
So if I switch over to synthetic, should I run a semi-synthetic for one oil change, then go to full synthetic? So I don't have a Dino/synthetic mix. Or does it make a difference? I have little experience with synthetic, only thing I've used it in was my sled.
i had so much gas in my oil i just started filling it with gas instead. but seriously. Shell, cheap and easy. end of the day, it all burns the same.
i kinda thought it was the only weight in that oil cause i haven't seen it in anything else. the car really doesn't use any oil. right now it has around 24,000 miles on it. i had a 2011 Legacy 3.6R. it was really a nice car and ran very well. i liked that 6 cyl engine. the only downside was that it was black. the one and only black car i've ever had.
Mitsubishi recommends running Mobile 1, but I switched that crap out on my 1500 miles over to Rotella T6 with the quickness. I gave them an OEM filter and two jug's of T6 and paid $8 oil change and they kept the old stuff too. The car is no longer giving off fume vapors from the engine bay. I used to run RedLine 20-50w in my DC2 Type R 13.1 compression ratio race car. Great stuff, just not as easily accessible when you're doing an oil change after every two events. Now I buy large quantities of R-T6, much more affordable. With some oils you can feel the performance degrade rather obviously within a week or two.
Still have that car? I'd like to see it. I'm not a honda/acura or anything else really type of guy so I don't even know what make that is but sounds cool or maybe just that its a "race car"
Mobil 1 = Bad Rotella T6 = Good Mobil 1 tends to break down very quickly and the 30 weight quickly drops and continues to drop. This increases wear. The T6 40 weight is thicker to start and doesn't break down like the Mobil 1. Which provides very good protection/lubrication. The heavier oil is especially helpful in the turbo'd engines. ^This is your best bet if you want real data to look at. Or you can just trust everyone that's done it before and re-read the first two lines of my post.
I ran mobile 1 in my 11 wrx and it would use lose about a qt of oil every 3k. Switched to rotella T and then to rotella t6 and the oil usage stopped.

Welp. I'm obviously not smart enough to even consider changing my own oil, so I think I'll just bring it to the dealership and have them do it from now on. My bad.
Not sure if being sarcastic or..... We'll use subaru syn at our shop (tonka suby), but you have to specify. We even carry mobil1 AKA dasani water. The cases have much dust on them.
Google (at least the search bar) has far fewer moving parts than a car, so being unable to operate the former would preclude me from operating the latter. I'd imagine it's not too much more expensive to have them do it, anyways. At least then I know it won't get screwed up.
+1 for this. Plus you know what's been done, I don't trust many people when it comes to working on my car.
2000 more miles and then I'm putting in for the first time the "good" oil, T6 Castrol Syntec since day 1
I also use RT6, but cant find it at the 3 walmarts I checked. Does anyone know if walmart stopped stocking this brand? Or where do you get your big jugs of RT6?
