ive been wonderin if i should get a cold air or an short Ram intake?? ive heard that short ram is better for subies?? is that true?? do i really even need a new intake for my 02 WRX?
oh i c...dats what i heard too...but couple of my buddies told me that with a new intake the car can breath easier??
On a STi with a Cobb stage 2 map, the SPT short ram intake was only able to produce 4-6 WHP and WTQ when Cobb tested it this past summer... this was the STi with the VF39 turbo with a full exhaust system and ~17 psi. They haven't tested the intake on the smaller 2.0L WRX engine (or even the 2.5L WRX engine: different intake diameter from factory), but with a stock turbo with around stock boost on the 02 WRX, an intake will likely net you zero gains. Secondly, a bad intake will hurt performance. I can't say about Cold Air intakes, so I'll leave it at that.
Just do the free intake mod. Then add a K&N filter. Thats all you should have to do. http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=167 After doing this mod you can hear the turbo alot more.
Always a lot of opinions on intakes. SOA aftermarket SPT CBE combined with their intake and heat shield is claimed to increase a 2006 WRX by 18 hp and 20 ftlb of torque. What is more amazing is the claim that the 2006 STI will increase by 45 hp and 24 ftlb of torque. SPT says it has been dyno proven.
The Typhoon made about 12 whp and 9 tq on a stock STI per a thread on IWSTI. A shorter intake will allow air to flow better which should help spool a little. If you aren't planning lots of other upgrades do a K&N drop in.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ agreed in full... I do fancy my spt intake tho, and with dyno results showed like a 2+ hp 2+ trq with cobb stage 2 tuning. with the spt (got after cat back exhaust) my mpg went up, and the turbo definatly spooled quicker. but it does heat up... the stock tubing for all your intake **** is made to not hold in heat... most after market components are thick material, and will hold heat much much longer then your stock cai. the spt, was tested and shown abou a 10 degree (or more) difference in heat after a good run. both items were tested after a month of driving to prove that the ecu has learned majority of what it needed to learn. So it comes down to prefrence, and what your willing to live and deal with to get what you want out of your car. EVERY aftermarket product has it's pro's and cons.
Cold air intakes on a turbo setup arent going to be COLD AIR intakes after they run through the turbo. I never understood anything other than a ram on a turbo application. The stock intakes on subaru's are good, and easily modified for SMALL gains.
^^^^ I tell you what, you get the intakes and come summer time I will show you the difference on my car. You start running some intake temp probes and you will see the difference. Russ
gotcha. I'm just going off of what I dealt with on my dsm. With those cars they make no difference, the air is heated up so much between the turbo and the throttle body that it is the exact same as having a ram.
I went with the spt short ram and even though there is no gains it does sound really really cool. You can hear the turbo spool and the bov is super loud. I got really tired of not being able to hear my car.
