Ok so I want to sell my 2000 2.5rs and get a 02-03 WRX stock like many of you have found out. but here are some pros and cons.... KEEP rs: ~all paid for ~ sound system due to arrive any time now... ~insurance stays down. Get wrx: ~more $$$ to for loan. ~more $$$ for insurance. I like the wrx better tho and well HELP??!!??!!??!! Keep Sell/Trade
It depends on what you want. Personally, I prefer the GD chassis to the GC. Yes, the GC is lighter and more agile, but the GD is no slouch and the chassis is a lot stiffer to start with. The added crash protection is a nice thing as well. Another plus is you are starting with a car that came from the factory turbocharged, you're not going to run into some of the reliability issues that can come with a swap. And bugeyes are dead sexy
OK so im not all that crazy...... 75% of me is going to keep it...as much as i dont want to....yet another thing....need and want 2 different things now. :ugh: :emo: :hsugh: ....
go all out. you only live once and just think of it as less money going to beer or other mind altering substances... less trips to Wendy's and more time driving around a sick car. Or you can sell your body for money!!!
just swap it. the RS is paid for, if you can afford a loan payment every month, plus the insurance increase, you could have a ballin' ECS/GT JDM driveline swap in under a year. Those guys stand behind their swaps, and with the next year's saved money you could buy all the braces to make up for the chasis rigidity
Some things I agree with here... 1) I too like the GD over the GC but the GC is a close second and the RS trim makes it an ever closer than a normal second. 2) GD chasis very good in terms of stiffness but the GC can be properly modified for better handling. 3) Bugeyes are dead sexy (wouldn't own one if I thought otherwise) The disagreements... 1) The GC did come turbo charged; just not in the US market. 2) A proper JDM WRX swap with wiring harness and ECU is very reliable. Final opinion... I say keep the RS and do a swap like others have said. Its paid for, the insurance will stay low, and you can make all of the necessary upgrades for both power and handling as you go along. A swap is in the future for my GC but I get to drive a WRX to satisfy my urges in the mean time. I think having the WRX is hindering my GC's progress since my turbo need is met daily.
is it your dd? can you go without a car that long while it is being swapped? just another way to look at it? if you can i say swap it would be sweet!
if you shell out the 150 buck to get a second copy of the stock wiring harness from nasioc or a junk yard and get the wiring done prior to starting the swap you can do it in a day. I did my L wagon (complete JDM v4 driveline w/out the rear brakes hubs) in a single day in my driveway with my brother. The interior takes some time to make sure everything goes back together well, but you're only looking at three days on an easy schedule: one for tear down, one for mechanical swap, one for interior bits. I don't know a single person who can't go a weekend with out a car.
get a WRX wagon! insurance stays down!!!! and get the turbo!!! :woot::woot::woot::woot::woot::woot: ...but that RS with a swap would be titties!!!
This is my DD and I could drive a saburbin......How much is it for so called swap???? cuz what the insurance does not know wont hurt them....ALL they need to know is that I have a 2000 2.5rs......hehehe RIGHT????
Swap can be between $1k to $3k depending on what you can find price-wise. The most reliable swaps are the the JDM front clip variety that include all exhaust parts, turbo, and full ECU and wiring.
I gotta be honest. There is no way I would reccomend doing a swap on a car that is your DD. You are most certainly going to exceed whatever budget you put down, and depending on your technical skill the car will probably be down for a while as you do the work. In addition, almost 100% of the swapped cars I have seen have had misc electrical and mechanical gremlins. Not that they're major, but expect that type of thing to just come with the territory.
I agree with this. Doing a swap in a DD is only prudent as long as you have a reliable back-up vehicle ready.
I think if your thinking about it more than you should.. (meaning thinking about getting the car more than keeping it) then you already got your answer...
I should get it tuned first. THEN see were I want to go....sounds like down the road I.E. doing the swap, BUT have someone who knows what the heck they are doing do it.....
I dont think it has ever seen a tune in its life...i am at least the second owner. It has 170,000+ miles on it. I just got the valves touched up. Polished re surfaced, new head gaskets... so i think a tune is in stock....yes??
u sure can, bulwinkle tuned mine from a claimed stock 165 crank (subaru's claim) to 162 wheel. it dosent hit ya like a turbo, but pulls hard and from the line.. harder than it did atleast.
Yeah I know you can but gains are very minimal so my question was really why? In this thread it was being discussed, and sounded like it wasn't really worth it. I could see doing it for a bit more power and some more tourqe, and prolly better mpgs. http://mnsubaru.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33442
Are you certain the insurance would cost more? It is possible that the car you want has more safety features or the likes that may keep you're insurance reasonable. I don't think an 02-03 WRX is considered a "sport" car by insurance standards, so you might be surprized.
What kind of mods are you running? A stock WRX does around 170 to the wheels, and you're saying you got retuned to 162 at the wheels? Unless you're running some sort of built N/A motor, you aren't getting 162 WHP. When I switched my insurance from the RS to the WRX wagon it went up about 3 dollars a month. The sedans are more to insure from what I've found with my own policy.
So i am picking up my 09' WRX tomorrow..... :yumyum::yumyum::biggrin: Insurance: I just switched from a $500.00 beater P.O.S with only liability on my car to full coverage on a new WRX with a $500 deductible and my insurance only went up $40.00 I don't think there would be too much of a difference between the RS and the WRX for insurance. Just my $0.02
40.00 per 6 mo I assume or 40.00 per month? 40.00 per month would be ftL. When I switched from a 2004 BMW 325xi to the 2005 Subaru Legacy GT LTD, it was 40.00 extra every 6 mo. Not too bad, though I was hoping for a little less.
