I'm thinking Qwest DSL, up to 7mbs w/2yr agreement, $36.99/mo. I believe it comes w/free modem(online offer) and yes I have a Home Package already. Any other good deals out there?
Comcast hi-speed cable internet 40.17 after taxes with U of M discount Sprint SERO plan on your Treo cell phone (29.99 + taxes +?insurance?) [mine's 41.84 including insurance] and JuneFabrics software (one time of 34) Just keep the service on the phone and you have 2.4Mbps for "free"
Check Best Buy. When I did it, I was able to get the promotion ($37/month) plus a $150 gift card for Best Buy. I may have even gotten another $25 for online photo developing, but can't remember.
Depends on what you want. I just talked to a neighbor and gave him my wireless router +10 bucks a month to help with his bill.
GOt qwest for life plan...$30.99 a month (with modem) but the connection is sometime questionable, when I comp is online it's ok...but when 2 gets on it seems like 5x slower and my comp sometime freezes on connection....I think in my area Comcast is the way to go, had them and never had an issue
what type of DSL modem do you have? how is each computer connected? if it's an actiontec, ditch that peice of ****, and go get a 2wire 2700HG. Best DSL modem available IMHO.... The actiontec modems have a notoriously bad network stack. if you try and make more than a handful of simultaneous connections, it will crap it's brains out. P.S... i work for a Qwest DSL ISP, USFamily.net
we have mediacom in the SW burbs and they suck. customer service is horrible. we have an above ground cable thats been sitting on the top of our street for 2 months now. it constantly gets ripped and we loose service. weve called numerous times for them to bury it and they never do. i can wait for winter to come and a plow to just destroy it.
Ideally, if they weren't such a rip-off, ComCast is going to be better than any dialup service price for price. I wish TimeWarner wouldn't have moved out of the state, they had sweet deals, 29.99 6 months then 35.99 after that. I have a hard time paying comcast 19.99 for the first 6 months with a 60.00 install fee, then start paying $60.00/ mnth after that This is why I went with qwest, 32.99/mnth with the option of their 7mbps dl for 42.99/mnth
You need to call them and tell them that you want your cable buried, neighborhood kids are playing with it / tripping over it and they are going to get sued if something happens ...they'll be out the next day guaranteed
Yea...I got that dam actiontec...Does qwest have a better modem out there? Since I'm paying to rent them, I can ask for the upgrade.
I must say I get the BEST deal on high speed internet. Ever since I moved into my house about 2 months ago, I have 5 STRONG wireless signal's that I snag. So my free internet > all. Thanks.
You internet theif, I say if someone is dumb enough to not encrypt their wireless network, they shouldn't even have a wireless network.... its a free for all
the best convenient deal for highz speed internet at 200 kbps is sprints mobile broadband plan for a 2 year contract and only $61.00 a month. you get a usb modem to plug in your laptop on the go, works everywhere and you can plug it in at home. when your moving, you can bring the internet with you . pricey but worth it for portable internet in a usb package.
sprint broadband internet is cheaper than that if you know what you're doing - see my first post in this thread there is also a sero plan for pure broadband access too
This is a rather unsafe way to go about it. On one hand, it is illegal to jack a network without permission (and yes, people have been prosecuted for it... just not around here). Additionally, the type of people that are retarded enough to run a WiFi network without protection, are usually down's syndrome enough to get viruses that are network-aware. It's like a sorority whore, she thinks that because the guy pulls out, she won't catch anything. When you come by to play, you better strap up.
IMO, I think Qwest offers the best bang for the buck. They're probably going to be about $15 cheaper a month or so than if you're getting service from Comcast. Comcast sometimes offers rates, but I have yet to see a rate competitive with Qwest's that isn't a promo rate. Unfortunately, I'm stuck with Comcast service as Qwest doesn't service my neighborhood.
I don't pay for cable either...got all the tools for comcast, mediacom and timewarner. Anyone want free cable? holla jk that would be illegal I don't think it would go to far seeing that is a PUBLIC wifi connection. If its not secured, it is considered public. There is no law stating that you HAVE to encrypt your wireless home network, so if it is open that is your fault. Not your neighbor who accidentally connects to your home network unknowingly thinking that he/she is connected through his qwest modem when really his wireless adapter is setup to connect to any open signal (default btw).
I'm with Comcast, getting really awesome fast speed that makes Superman look like a slug. YES, I said it. Qwest in my area sucks big donkey honkies, but IF they offered great speed around my area, I'd might have chosen them. My friend has Qwest in his area and it works really good So look around and try.
Hmmm.... I don't run a secure network. Downs Syndrome, huh? Could have fooled me. Why do I care if my network is secure? If someone wanted to drive up my driveway and sit in the front yard stealing my internet, so be it. However, nobody will get my wireless signal unless they are indeed right in front of my house. I can barely get it in the back garage. (Note that I cannot see a neighbor as there are too many trees in the way. As a matter of fact, only 2 neighbors within 500' of my house due to the undeveloped land on one side and the creek on the other) Now back to the name calling....
I wonder if it would be so simple in the practice. By that rationale, is leaving your house unlocked a way of keeping your house "public" and inviting all strangers to come in watch your TV and eat your food? I think it could be argued that since you are receiving a service that you're not paying for and that the owner of the service probably wouldn't want you using if he/she knew, it could be considered illegal. I think it's all in 'intent'. Good luck proving that, though.
Yes, you sir, have DDD syndrome. My earlier statement is broad, as in most population. Next time I'll be sure to list all the specifics about the situations you absolutely must be in to qualify as a *******. Glad I could spell things out for you. As for defending my original position, I can usually pick up most people's networks within 100' with basic hardware. Case in point, Dream can find nearly half a dozen vulnerable networks from his particular location. For the rest of us that don't have the luxury of seclusion, we DO have to worry about security.
This may have been covered, but I didn't see it. IMHO- DSL can be very good, but the ONE key question you NEED to ask is how far away from the central office your set-up will be. the farther away, the slower it is. or do this... http://www.dslreports.com/faq/334 If you're over 1 mile I'd say no thanks, the download is not as fast as cable. I have cable modem and love the speed and it's very reliable. I have not experienced any issues. In my book it's worth a few extra dollars.
Pretty much yea, I don't know where you live, but my doors are locked even when I'm home. I agree, breaking your way through someones secured network...obviously not a good idea, playing it off like you know nothing about this computer that you got from your cousin, you turned it on and could all of a sudden surf the net thinking it was a free public wifi connection...don't see how they could charge you with something...also, if you have ever installed a wireless card, windows sets the option to connect to any unprotected network as default..go figure anyways...
Qwest does off the 2wire 2700HG, but if your renting a modem, your being ripped off. Here, just buy one: http://www.gearxs.com/gearxs/product_info.php?products_id=8507 Current Price: $19.99 with free shipping. it's 100x better than an actiontec modem.
Oh, but they can... http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,122153-page,1/article.html So the best recommendation would be to find the best provider for your location, and if you get WiFi, make sure you lock it down. Be cool, stay in school.
Here's the funny thing, almost anytime you log into a wireless network, your computer will make a DHCP request. Essentially, your computer has just asked for permission to join the network and use the connection, and the router, configured by the network owner, has given it. it is the network administrator's job to prevent unauthorized usage. this whole He/She knew bull**** is just that. Setting up an unsecured wireless network is completely the fault of the admin on the following points: 1. Many DSL/Cable modems don't come with built in wireless functions. 2. Even fewer come with the wireless functions enabled by default. 3. The few that come with them enabled by default, have security enabled by default. Thus eliminating the "i didn't know it had wireless" argument on that one. further down the line, anyone who plugs in a wireless router KNOWS they have setup a wireless network, and if it's not secured, mostly thought they were smarter than the tech doc writers and chose to skip the manual, and the instructions that always suggest setting up wireless security. Now, i know there are plenty of people out there opt to leave a wireless network unsecured, and that's totally up to you. but after seeing how many windows laptops physically carry worms and self-propagating viri onto wireless network after wireless network, you won't get anyone who doesn't have my personal VERBAL permission on my network. just remember what the cop tells you every time they pull you over: "Ignorance is no excuse"
I fully agree that if someone sets up a wireless network and doesn't properly secure it, they should be the ones to first blame should any abuse (theirs or otherwise) come from that network. My previous point was more along the lines that if you purposely choose not to pay for Internet access because you can steal someone elses broadband for free, that it's more theft than it is using a 'public' network. But back to the original question at hand... I really wish I could get Qwest DSL after reading: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071019/ap_on_hi_te/comcast_data_discrimination_2 Pretty weak on Comcast's part, IMO. :/
From what i've seen, be prepared to pay a **** ton for DSL. if your with qwest, stick with qwest if going with DSL.
