my front passanger wheel bearing is done for...and i was wondering if anyone on here could help me out getting it fixed. I know there are a few scooby techs on here...but funds are kinda low right now, so how much do you think it would cost me to get it all replaced? PS: '99 rs
Just wondering but what happens when the wheel bearing goes bad? What are the warning signs? Squeaks? Chirps?
^ you will hear a howling sound from the wheel. it will vary with speed. should be pretty noticeable. sorry i cant help, i have never had to do a wheel bearing before. just a thought i saw over on RS25, someone is selling JDM GC8 hubs w/ good wheel bearings for like $30 shipped per hub. he has a left and a right. http://www.rs25.com/forums/showthread.php?t=58498
dude my rear wheel bearing is howling like a WeirdWolf...but thank god i got fuji to help me out..this spring...
can someone go into a little more depth with the sound cause i don' know if it's my brakes or wheels bearings that's making the sound.
i don't know bout the front but i got the rear done for $273 at midas. Its about half that if you take everthing apart and bring hub assembly to machine shop to press bearing out and press new one in. i did that for the other side that also went. Front wheelbearings are about half price of the rears so it should be cheaper. Goodluck with the wheelbearing overhaul.
its fine dude we have people that go literally thousands of thousands of miles on toast wheel bearings
I drove back and forth from Duluth to Colorado two times with a bad wheel bearing....back in the day when had no cares in the world...or no money not a good idea to let it go too long though. just be careful and drive conservatively
I ran a bad rear wheel bearning for a few months, probably at least 3 or 4 thousand miles. I thought it was just from my snow tires, but when I switched back to summer tires, the noise was still there. The bearing was very pitted, I'll dig up the pics from my home computer later. I don't think it would have gone much longer though... I ended up replacing it with a Legacy rear wheel bearing which was a double roller bearing instead of a double ball bearing. I'm not sure if there's a difference for the front bearings or not. found the picture...
well...mines makin a pretty loud noise when im turning left. Just makes me nervous! I just cross my fingers and hope my wheel doesnt fall off. Im talkin to bikerboy about him fixing it early next week
if you consider a 99 new...then sure. When i turn...it sounds like a rubbing. At first i thought something got caught in my wheel well, cus it was humming while going straight. When i got to work, i put it up on a lift to unload the suspension so i could see in the wheel well. Obviously there was nothing there, but the wheel had a little jiggle to it. Thats when i knew it was the wheel bearing...plus i had a tech come over and check it for me and he agreed with me
lawl...I remember my old 05 wagon had a rear bearing going out...for about 18 months. Then one night on a long drive home it started sending out sparks and making some REALLY bad noises. (Tip: when you ahve to turn the stereo up to get over the sound it's time to bite the bullet ) I decided to pull into my sisters pllace halfway and drive her car home the rest of the way. Came back the next day with a trailer and as I was driving it up onto the trailer...CLUNK...the entire wheel and hub came off.
LOL. Been there, done that. Except I was moving about 30mph at the time, and it was an old air-cooled VW, not a Subie (still an H-4 tho). There was 8"+ of snow on the ground which acted like a nice big cushion and nothing got hurt other than my ego.
Got a part number for that Legacy bearing ? I need to get my rears done, and since I AutoX the car, beefier bearings are probably a good investment. Stuart.
Legacy rear wheel bearing: Napa Part #: GRW175 or NTN Part #: 4T-CR1-08A05 Seals Subaru Part #'s: 28015AA100, 28015AA110, 28015AA050 I don't have the subaru part number for the bearing. The NTN # is from the side of the subaru bearing, matches exactly with the napa part. Brian or Erik could get you the subaru pn for it.
rear wheel bearing failure in GC's has more to do with heat transferring through the hub from the brake rotors from prolonged driving and track days than is really possible to generate at an autocross. that being said, they do go fast on GC's even from normal driving. i would get it fixed ASAP as it is one of the few problems that can cause your wheel to seize and possibly detach.
Yeah, I'd like to take care of it before July 1st, especially since Trish is co-driving again. I don't think it's bad bad yet, just a bit noisy, and on its way out. I don't feel any play in it yet. Stuart.
wow last thing I expected form someone wokring at a dealership... although your statement may be true you are putting safety at risk... yes you could go for 1000's of miles without anything happening or you could go another 50 and have the wheel come off... (drastic but it happens)
I once drove for a week in a land cruiser with no brakes, I just e braked everywhere i went ( I was young and dumb and broke) Was it possible? Yes. Was it really stupid and unsafe? Yes.
In the first page of this thread I posted a pic of a noisy wheel bearing that I probably put a few thousand miles on (noise was masked by noisy snow tires). The way it looked when I took it out, I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did. I would suggest changing it soon.
thats cause the axle nut and wheel hold it together on the subaru... so it doesnt fall apart, but the longer you go the more chance you have of having to replace the whole hub assembly, then you may damage the axle...
well yeah, although it isnt safe, most of the time nothing happens, my RR has been going out for the last 2 years, getting louder every time i drive it.
Interested post I found on NASIOC... http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1056731&highlight=legacy+rear+wheel+bearing SubieGal says: -------------- All oem replacements from Subaru are now the superceded upgraded "legacy" parts This is not something I would recommend you do yourself although the rear bearings are easier than the front if you do not get it pressed in perfectly, if you do not get the seals to seat right... you'll be swapping them out again, and soon. if you insist on trying, this may help: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=787070 i would recommend swapping bearing + all seals, snap ring + axle nut and you will need to inspect the hub for damages. good luck Jamie -------------- So the OEM part should be fine then. Stuart.
I would agree with not doing it yourself unless you have access to a press and experience using it. I did mine with my dad's help, but we had done many bearings, etc in the past and it has lasted probably 50k miles now. That's good that they are now using the legacy bearing for everything. It should be easy to verify. It should NOT look like the picture I posted in the first thread. ie, it should not have balls in it, it should have rollers.
Yeah, I have no interest in doing this by myself. I was just pointing out the use of the Legacy bearing by default now. That's nice. Stuart.
bikerboy i believe has a wicked cool device for seating it in correctly. i need my rear pass done, it is dead... along with my rear struts, again.
Has anyone known a wheel bearing to squeak like an old door? I have the sound coming from my passenger front wheel. I had no clue what it was until someone said wheel bearing. But each wheel bearing I've heard growls at me.....never "creeeeeeeak". But I have no clue what else it could be also. But anyway, I'm pulling that spindle out on the weekend and taking it to a shop to get them to press on a new bearing for me.
My 04 WRX makes a noise when turning left as well... Not a growl though, more of a higher pitched whine or rubbing noise... Seems to be coming from my front passenger wheel only! Never really thought of a wheel bearing, but this thread makes me believe that is what I have going wrong too! :emo: It also seems to happen when the car is cold and goes away as I drive, or seems to go away a bit as I break. It definitely happens as my tires rotate, so it has to be something... Does this also sound like it coule be a bearing? Thanks, Marc
^^^^ does it do it going left and right or just left....??? if so it is probably from the right side (as stated) typical of wheel bearings... as you load up the outside or opposite to your turning...
