OK from my other thread there seems to be some interest in getting a group buy. I have used a place in Plymouth before (powder coating tech.) IIRC it was 50.00 per wheel plus sand blasting which was 10.00 per wheel. There are some other companies that do it as well so I will be in touch with them to see if they will do a deal with use as a group. Colors, they are endless so post what you want Matt Quote number one from powder coating Tech. 50.00 per wheel for coating (color dependant) 25.00 for a set for sand blasting (depending on finish) He will give us a 15% discount for a set of five or more. So we are looking at 192.00 for a set from the first quote. More to come! Update: I spoke to the other guy I know that does PC and he was not able to do a better price. So here it stands.
Color: Something that doesn't show brake dust dents and dings. Black? Do tires have to be off the wheels? What's the turnaround like? It's going to depend on what the finances are like, but I'm interested.
Matt, Does this place have a website so we can all see the different colors they offer? Im game for this so count me in!
If the price is right I am in. Possible a Satin Black or else a nice dark antharacite. Let me know Matt.

For those asking about the tires, I imagine the shop would need them off. A, they need to blast the wheel first to get the old paint off, or the powdercoat won't adhere, and I don't think you want your rubber exposed to the blasting process. B, powdercoating is a high-temp process; I don't know at what point tires would start to melt (since they obviously withstand pretty high temps under spirited driving) but I wouldn't want to throw mine in the oven...
Yeah, in order to do a good job, the tires would have to come off. What we were asking is if they would take off and remount the tires, or if there was added expense of having that done somewhere else.
I would be down, but I would need a loaner set of 18's for my car while it is being done. I wouldn't drive on them at all, so you don't have to worry about some chump abusing your rubber...my car is garaged all winter.

I have heard of people just painting the face of their rims while leaving the tires on; thought that is what you were getting at. The place that coated mine was not set up to deal with mounting/dismounting at all; wheels are a pretty small part of their business. Can't speak for the place being discussed of course.
Don't forget the valve stem(s) will need to come out also... I'm interested. I can do the dismount/mount abd ballance thing at work. Maybe I can work a speical "carry in" deal. Who is interested in that? (don't meen to hi-jack the thread)

<--- has minor knowledge of powder coating process. my buddy just got a powder coating system awhile ago. so i have learned a decent amount about how its done. when tehy cook the wheels they only heat them to about 350 or 400 degrees F that is just enough to melt the powder and get it to adhere to teh rim. i am pretty sure that the tires can take the heat. (i have heard of paint shops that bake cars with the tires on) i would still think that it would be best if you removed the tires. becuase you dont want you tires to get snad blasted, or oversprayed. and if the tires on on then they will not be able to coat th ewhole rim (ie stuff under the tire) -no jack intended-
so when can i get this done. i want to get it done before summer. can you give me a number to get a qoute from them Matt.
will it be possible to do this in the future, I would like to eventually powdercoat my pugs, but first I need them, and a lift, and tires, and rear discs, and rear LSD conversion............ maybe a year from now? give or take a couple months
hey, my buddy says he could do a full set of rims for $150. he's gonna clearify it today? how many people is interested. the more people, the cheaper it is!
Sorry to those who are interested in this I have been dragging my heals with the holidays. One of the shops was closed till the 3rd so I put it on the back burner till they opened back up. I will get the info together in the next week.
I would like in on this (if I don't sell my car first). This may be a stupid question but...do all five sets need to be the same color or can we all choose different ones?

I might know of another set of four rims of a friend who is interested, depending on price. Have you guys have done this yet?
I have another guy I have to talk to. Give me a day or so and I will have more info posted in the first post
