I've got a 98 Legacy OB, 2.5l with 90k miles. I "think" I may be in need of headgasket replacement. Here's the symptoms:

    1) Overheated out of the blue last week. Coolant all over engine compartment.
    2) Bubbling in the reservoir.
    3) exhaust smell in the coolant reservoir (not sure if that really matters)

    However,
It hasn't happened since. Heater works fine. Coolant level fluctuates between hot and cold levels as it should.

My local mechanic can't find any problems and doesn't think headgasket failure would cause the overheating. Don't think he knows Subaru's too well.

Assuming my problem really is headgasket failure, can anyone recommend a decent place to have the repair done? I want it done right, but don't really want to pay dealer service rates.

    Thanks in advance!
    Mike

if it has never had it's gasket changed before....then most likely, it's going out. I have never taken my car to any shops to do HG jobs so i wouldn't know. I do my own things. All the phase 1 2.5L had HG problems.

    Thanks Yo!

Mike, I got your heads off today, and they are being sent out. I got a couple of other things replaced as well...Rear access cover, and rear main seal. Oil pump will get re-sealed tomorrow. And then I'll just be waiting for your heads to come back.

BTW, you should go back and ask the "mechanic" how much coolant dye he added. Your coolant looks like it was toxic green waste and it seriously looked like it was glowing!
