    hey all,
i love my subbie, its a quick little car, but it could be quicker. right now i have an intake set up, and some suspension. i dotn know what to do from here. i want to get more hp. i would like to get 200 (enough to smoke the wheels going around corners)or a little more out of this engine. what would be the best way to do this while maximizing torque. right now i have a real low end torque problem.

i need some ideas of what to do and possible prices if i do it.
right now the next thign i can think of would either be. underdrive pulleys(unorthodox racing), or exhaust (2.5" header back with highflow cat, and greddy or hks muffler).

i have really had a hard time finding performance parts for the 93-98 imprezas. so anythign i can make myself would be sweet.

is there any tunign i can do. maybe ecu or timing stuff.

    i am lost,
    thanks for the advice

Start by trading it in for a WRX with a MANUAL transmission.

And you'll need more than 200 hp to drift powering out of a corner (if you're talking about the power spinning the wheels, not just exceeding lateral grip of the tires)

if i go too far over 200 i think my motor will go piff. its got over 100k on it. its a subbie enginge so its good for like another million miles, but i dotn wanna push it. right now with stock hp i can break the back end out and spin the rear tire on some corners, with another 40 or 50 hp i should be able to do it on more corners. mind you i am talking 90 degree corners here, no 50 mph banked corners.
i would trade in for a wrx or sti but I DONT HAVE THE MONEY.

Does anyone know if the stock wrx/sti exhaust would fit on my subbie? stock exhaust is what 2"? those have o2 sensors in them still right?

Maybe what you need is better tires then. I have a 2.5TS '02 Wagon, I guess with the stock RE92s, I could brake it loose, but I have since put some much better tires on there, and in addition to cornering faster, I can no longer break the tires loose from just power.

Oh, and you want torque for spinning the tires, not HP.

Seriously though, I think you'd be throwing your money away. Best you'll be able to do IMO is intake and exhaust.. and while the car will sound cool..it won't gain as much power as you're looking for. (and the tires will still be crappy ;-) ) .. and it will still be an automatic.

Consider trading in for a WRX.

i actually want the torque for better acceleration. whats a used wrx going for now a days? last time i looked you could only get em new. i know that i can find 2.5s for around 9-10k. i was looking into a swap for a 2.5turbo or just a 2.5 na then turbo later w/ 5mt but its a bear market, and doing the swap would take a long time with runing the ecu and everything. right now i am a full time student. so i have little for time and money.

Yeah, doing the motor + tranny swap = you're better off finding a WRX. (will save lots of money... and time.)

Aren't there WRXs coming off of lease now? Should be a few around used. I agree a 2.5 turbo is even better (any used 10k STis out there? ;-)), since you have that much less lag. Adding a turbo to a 2.5 NA engine can be a pain too. (Ben? you around?)

I'm no subie expert, so someone else start talking before I have to make up crap (if I haven't already) :-p

I don't have a problem with my standard RS tranny and the powerband of the WRX motor. I think it's a good match because I don't feel like hitting a brick wall when I shift into 4th gear and 5th gear is not much of a cruising gear. It's shorter from what I was told.

Lately, I've seen MY02 WRX's right around the $15000 price. It's cheaper and more reliable to buy a WRX (or even an RS) than to convert your auto to a manual and turbocharge that. If you want instant torque, get a N/A motor. If you want high HP, get a turbo motor. If you want high torque and high HP, get a Corvette. :p

I think you meant instant torque.. Turbo cars have a lot of torque too, it's just not there as immediately :-D

Corvette.. Or how about an Audi Wagon? :-p

Listen to that Audi wagon at the track.
just watch from 0:45 to 0:54, and from 1:20 to 1:30. Make sure your subwoofer is on :-o

WTF? There are more used WRX's out there than fat girls at an ice cream convention. Soooo easy to find.

Hint on the "2.5 NA then turbo later" idea--I'd forget that one in a real hurry. There are so many smarter ways to have a turbocharged vehicle these days. Hell, even the Outback gets a 2.5L turbo from the factory now.

    Only you would know :p

Don't go the NA swap and turbo, that does seem a bit wierd. I don't agree with the "just get a WRX" idea. As Joel so eloquently put it there are tons of them out there. Be different, work up your current car. I had a 2.2 with a mapped plant that was pretty quick. Why not look into supercharger options for it? I was just starting to research kits or builds for that on my car when it was destroyed. A supercharged 2.2, maybe use a 2.2 Legacy turbo block. That would be really **** cool and one helluva sleeper.

Martin considering your current situation and I dont know how deep your pockets are but if I was in your shoes and just wanna have some fun and get broke, I'd install some NOS and add an intake, exhaust and finish school. Than buy the really fast toyz.

The whole idea of building what you currently have is great except that there is soo much to do and fix up to get the performance your looking for.

Or you could just get with some really deep pocket loaded friends at a track event that has all the toys like JP and have him let you show him how its done!

    C :D

lol, my pockets are that deep. NOS sounds like a mess. i wold probably end up warping my block beyond recovery. so i would prefer to stay away from it.
what comapnies make superchagers for this car? and roughly how pricey? i have heard of turbo kits for the na 2.2 but they are like 3.5K for a crappy kit.
i think i may just end up doing some exhaust work, and leaving it at that tell i get sometign better. supposebly theres an AWSOME guy in maple plain. he is suppose to do good work, all bent from 1 piece stuff like that. and he is CHEAP. maybe 150 tops for headerback. if i do this. (which i probably will) i gotta find a highflow cat, and a muffler. any suggestions?

But if you go turbo or even supercharger you'll have to change your exhaust again. That should come after your major engine enhancements. Intakes are easy enough to pull off. I think that engine uses a hot-wire MAF so it should take to an intake pretty well. It's those m-fing pos hotfilm f'ing MAFs that don't :(!
