Hey guys my brother wants to get into autobody or, auto mechanics or maybe welding.

What CC would you prefer or have you had experience in.

He is currently at century college right now. just taking core requirements for auto mechanics because the program doesnt start until fall, but is thinking about st paul college and dunwoody as other options as well.

    Thanks any input is appreciated.

Stay away from Dunwoody. 30+ thousand for a 2 year degree is mind numbing. If the Auto mechanics industry is anything like aircraft mechanics, it doesn't really matter where you go, you're gonna show up to your first job and start in the same place. So, if I were him, I would stay where I was at and just do well in my classes. Short of something like UTI or Wyotech, I would think that all of the classes are similar.

I am going to admit that I am biased against Dunwoody a little, since they told me my Airframe and Powerplant license was "kinda technical, but we don't recognize that type of thing here at Dunwoody." I literally got up, said a nice string of expletives, and walked out. The arrogance of the "counselor" I talked to was astounding. I went in thinking that there would some sort of exploring as to what they offered, but it was a love session about how great their school is.....Not impressed.

I went to Century College for Auto Body and wasn't impressed with the program. It was very disorganized and ended up discouraging me from doing it for a career. My advice is to go to a couple Auto shops and see where they like to hire students from. That would be the best way to know who is giving a proper education to their tech students.

yeah that is true^^ when your in either of those programs your required to do a internship so your only at school for a bit of the day and the rest of the day you go off to your internship were you still get payed and learn as well. they help you find interships and jobs to. when a dealership has a spot open dunwoody instuctors are one of the first to know and they pass them onto their students in the program. there is also a chrysler program there, hope that helps

HTC i would recommend against, i went there for my mets (mechanical engineering technology) and i had to do all my work (like sign up for classes, figure out what classes worked, figure out which of my previous classes worked etc.) counselors sucked, i could call the school and ask a question, leave a voicemail and low and behold NO ONE would call me back.

I am currently at Dunwoody for welding. And yes it may be more $$$ but I believe you get what u pay for... How many of the other schools have the reputation and contacts that Dunwoody has??? Far more people have good things to say then bad... Tell me any school that a person who is paid to get students enrolled isn't gonna wave pompoms about their employer???

Go to Dunwoody and ask to talk to Damon. Big black guy... Tell him Nathan Walkington from welding recommended him to you... When his job was done with me I still used him to get answers when I got nowhere tru others...

^^most quotes in one post lol, but uti is outrageous in price if i remember right its like 30k plus for a year i think. but you could also try ridgewater in willmar since they offer auto body, price is good it will probably run you 2-3k a semester if that. i have had a few friends graduate from there and had nothing to complain about, its cheap but will get you a job doing auto body. Its not like applying to be a lawyer, where the higher the school reputation the more likely you will get a job.

STAY AWAY from UTI and Wyo-tech. i went to UTI and know a bunch of people that went to Wyo-tech. waste of money stay closed to home and you will get the saem info. just remember that you will learn most working on the cars not at school. so try to get a tep job at a lube shop will help you out. also look into ASE test. i do have a CD with ASE pratice test for A1-A8. also if school has discounts on tools like with snap on or mac or matco use those discount while in school. also look for old tool/box for sale. i got a 6k worth of tool and a box for 2500 on craiglist. good luck if you get stuck with anythign i still have all my school books that u can use.

everything is cheap once you get west of the cities, i used to live/now moving back to hutchinson, and hutch to willmar is 40 min i think, and if you don't mind a crappy apartment they can be had for the sub 500 range.

NDSCS is located in Whapeton ND(40 miles south of Fargo, ND/Moorhead MN). They have a good program for lots of car related things.

A shop I know hired a kid out of the UTI diesel program.... we will just say that it was a major mistake.

Check out Saint Paul College i go there for something else but i have heard good things about their auto dept and welding. All their auto and welding programs fill up fast. They are that expensive.

    Comparison:

Dunwoody Welding Program 9mths long, Community College Program - 2yrs..

Dunwoody - welding from day 3, CC- 3mths in students hasnt touched a welder

Dunwoody - Me: got given a heads up on a job.. got hired because of the Dunwoody Name they asked for applicants... not sure too many CC's do that for their students...

    Good choice with Dunwoody...
