I am a bit undecided with the direction I want to go with my car and whether it is really what I want so I ask you ...

Who has a WRX (preferably manual) with a

    2.0/2.5 with a VF22
    2.0/2.5 with a VF34
    2.0/2.5 with a VF39
    2.0/2.5 with a VF43
    2.0/2.5 with a 16g
    2.0/2.5 with a 18g
    2.0/2.5 with a 20g
    2.0/2.5 with anything bigger

The reason I ask is I would like to take a ride in said cars and feel the power delivery and such.

    Thanks in advance
    Chet

Mods can you change the title to "Who has which turbo?" I think that would make more sense...

I guess I can explain the root of all this, I got to drive Subiedave's STi again last night and well ... I WANT ONE but I can't afford one at this moment. Also I am still kicking myself for not getting an 06-07 wagon. I have rode in Scuba's car and as soon as he gets another tune I will again and don't get me wrong it feels great now but I'm sure he can get more out of it.

Would a guy be happy with a small 16g and meth or will it want him asking for more? As I have never felt 300whp or higher in a Subaru I don't know what to expect. I want a daily driven car with little to no hiccups and decent mileage.

Dream, Fobia, and Readymix could you all comment on this and to why you went bigger? I mean all of you had cars that would be fast to the average person on the forum. Before you did your bigger builds, also would you do it differently and how so?

I'm not looking to make a monster quite yet/or ever I just want something fun.

That's gonna be tune dependent too. Gearing will make a difference also. vf39/43 are pretty much the same turbo (beefed up wastegate area on 43). The biggest difference between 39/43 is the car they're attached to stock.

    Anyway...
    2.0 vf34 - Ray
2.5 vf39 wrx - Thomas, Sean, dude who bought Peter's old car, etc...
    2.5 vf39 sti - lots

An STi shouldn't be too difference from 06-07WRX's with the Vf39 turbo.

I say fix your car and get a 2.5l motored car and as mentioned get a vf39.

I bet I could sqeeze more power out of my set-up IF I ran meth, but I'm very confident I've maxed out the 16g as it stands.

fix your car and sell it

+1 to this. The VF39/43 on the 2.5L WRX is torquey as hell (ie; lots of fun around town), but also has the top end to really haul ass.

I wanted a larger turbo so I had some headroom, and so I could get better mileage. Larger turbos make you work a little more for boost thus keeping your fuel consumption better, unless you drive like an asshat all the time. Also, larger turbos are a bit snappier off boost with less restriction from the larger turbine and housing.

Mine is a GT2871R 56 trim. .86 A/R. Its essentially a GT3071R, but with a 2.7mm smaller turbine wheel. Garrett rates it at the same HP capability as the 3071 at 475 hp max. It works very well on my 2.2, and if someone did a nice job with the manifold and UP, it would be even better.

You have more. We ran out of time. And don't forget the cool thing about the mitsh turbos, run some 110 lead, and boost up to 26-27psi.

Chet, I already explained this too you at firestone. You need to figure out where you want your power to come in at. If you want quick spool, go with the 16g, if you want a freeway monster, go with the 20g. You can't compare a 2.0L+ random turbo to a 2.5L+ random turbo. You are talking a 25% increase in displacement. Thats like trying to compare a chev 350 output to a chev 454 output. That 25% more displacement really changes things.

If you want a fun quick DD, go with the big16g/evoIII and run around 19psi. Throw in some race gas, bump the boost to 25+psi and have some fun. If you want to get a bit of a mix, make a franken turbo like Fuji. Small hot wheel in the larger housing. You sacrifice a little spool, but you gain it up top.

^^^I would not want more boost out of my car....21.4 is high enough:biggrin:

doesn't the stock 2.0l pistons run the risk of destruction around 25PSI?

Its not purely about boost. You could run 20psi out of a 35R and roast them, where as 25psi out of a 16g isn't even in the same ballpark as far as airflow is concerned.

This is what I mean can a guy be happy with a WRX knowing that a VF39 is going to getting at the point where if he goes any farther he's gonna have to look into a new tranny.

Trust me I want to but I am weighing out my options first.

This is sorta what I'm looking for ...

    I have thought about a GT28 on a 2.0/2.5 platform.

I know Russ and I'm not saying I took your word with a grain of salt, I just wanted to see others opinions. I don't want to compare a VFxx 2.0 to a VFxx 2.5 I just wanna see where people are at and what they feel like.

In all honestly, I think you should figure out that noise before you get too serious about a turbo. It's fun to be fast, but in a wrx it's not all about speed. Maybe get yourself focusing on some additional suspension mods like sways and endlinks, maybe upgrade those brakes too with some ss lines. :yumyum:

find and fit a turbo to your needs with the car. no reason at all to have 400whp on a DD, really. and if you dont plan to track it at all, why bother with certain set ups... all depends, again, on what you want to do with the car and what you expect out of it

AUTO = one long gear from launch to the time you let off it pulls, wide open no loss of boost beween gears.

    520cfm @ 2PR @ 60%.
    525cfm max flow 2.3 @ 19psi.

From the looks of that you could possibly have it zing up to a 2.6 or so at spool-up and taper down to about a 2.3 at redline. So that's 23.5 down to 19.1, before accounting for any losses in the system. That's being very simplistic and there's a bunch of other stuff to calculate, but it gives you an idea.
