How Porsche Created A Real-Life Electric Turbo Boost http://jalopnik.com/5728504/how-the-porsche-918-rsrs-amazing-hybrid-works/gallery/
Way cool. So basically the flywheel concept is...well it just seems unnecessarily complicated. Are they using the flywheel because a battery has a threshold for how much of a charge it can accept (for it to be effective the car would have to decelerate at a slow rate), where as a flywheel holding energy kinetically can be charged at any speed (see emergency braking as well as light taps)? I'm just trying to wrap my head around the reason this flywheel is neccesary. Couldn't they just utilized large capacitors that can store surge currents and discharge them through a resisted circuit to make sure the motors aren't overloaded? A capacitor also wont build a memory like a battery, which they are defeating through the flywheel system. Starting to see the logic... The guys at Porsche are incredible engineers so I'm confident this method is the most effective. I'm just wondering about hybrid applications. I know we've got a lot of guys on here with a wealth of knowledge in all of these fields so I just figured I would ask. I'm about dumb as a rock. This flywheel setup must be very heavy in order for it to store the kinetic energy developed by decelerating such a heavy vehicle. Right? They dont offer a lot of specs on weight, current, etc for obvious developmental reasons.
To get away from mining Nickel because it is such a polluting process. Also to save weight, I imagine.
isn't this thing around 3300lbs? Or is that the gt3r hybrid? Either way this is the best looking porsche since the 930s (turbo slant/slope nose) imho... then again, I like ugly cars lol
Batteries have limits to charge and discharge rates. My guess is this is a work around. It's also better for racing applications since energy doesn't have to be held over days like a standard hybrid. I doubt that configuration will be used long term, but as an early design I think it's inspired. Very out of the box.
I find it interesting that they used the passenger seat instead of finding somewhere else to put it.... like behind the front seats?!?!?!
Fine just use logic... see if I care... LOL I wasn't even thinking about the whole rear engine thing.
