Tire... you f*cking homos... I cut one down on the way to school this morning... I'd like to order one on the Internet and have shaved down to match my current tread depth... Or I guess I could do it locally for a premium I suppose You should have seen me... It was like NASCAR... Tire changed in less then five minutes :burr:
Anyway...I plan on doing this for my Summer tires and I've been told Norm's tire is a good option. http://www.normstire.com/
This. Specifically you will fry the center diff if you run different rolling circumference between front and rear tires. Exactly how tight that tolerance has to be is debatable, but it's not much no matter who you ask.
Tirerack can do them before shipping if you're willing to wait. Assuming you don't run into what I did and the only place they have your tire stocked is on the wrong side of the country to have it shaved.
If I remember correct, St.cloud Subaru told me 1/2" is the Max difference from the smallest to the largest tire. But yes, it is debatable, and having them all the same is the best route to go. I keep a tread depth gauge in my glove box, right next to my tire pressure gauge.
Jesus Christ I hope that's a typo or misquoted. Most tires only have 8/32" of usable tread depth. Maybe they meant rolling circumference new vs new (different size tires front to back). Even still that's pretty generous. I've always heard 1/4" inch rolling circumference. Which is around 1-2/32" tread depth. Seems like Subaru hasn't made it official recently, which makes me think it's more of a liability thing.
Maybe it was a 1/4" circumference, but for some reason 1/2" circumference is in my head. :edit: my other post I forgot to add max circumference difference. My bad.
ah ok, the only other awd vehicle i've ever owned was a Comanche and i don't think you would be able to differentiate the smell from it running to the smell of the transfer case eating itself. I found tire rack's parameters for replacing one tire at a time.
http://www.shoplet.com/Rubber-Finger-Tips/2984/sgdv The good news is they make these in different sizes, I'm sure you can find something that'll work.
My go-to tire place. Didn't know they offered this service (not that I have needed it yet). Great shop.
I've used them for wheel repair, balances, tire shaving, etc, and never been disappointed. they are modified car friendly. Not sure if we ever worked out a MNSubaru discount with them... I know it was talked about at one time. Either way, they are meticulous with aftermarket stuff, they'll stretch tires if you're into automotive goatse, and know how to deal with low cars.
Try ebay. On a couple occasions I've bought a tire of the exact same brand/model/size with partial wear for cheap.
