I have spoken in the past about the importance of having a catch can installed in you car. Now I have some good pics to show you why it is important.

Here is a pic of the I/C note the oil in the inlet.

Here are pics of the inducer look at the film of oil!:

I know a few of you have catch cans on your cars some of them even installed by me :D. I spent many hours this winter working on my car to make sure I did not have any more oil issues in the intake system. I have been testing my new system for the past month with great results. For those of you who have had a catch can installed by me I would like to see the car again to do the new modifications to stop this from happening. Or if you would like me to install one for you to prevent this I will gladly do so.

    Matt

All cars have crank case breathers and or valve cover breathers. Newer cars have to plumb this vapor back to the intake system as part of emissions rules. It is a particular issue on forced induction cars as there is always blow-by into the crankcase. This blow-by has to leave the inside of the motor, unfortuniately it carries suspended particals of oil with it. Since in the stock form it is plumbed back to the intake system the suspended oil is deposited in the turbo inlet hose hence the inducer pics.

Sounds like I need to make some cans soon. I will be out of town next week so I will get some going when I get back.

As a note I have to look at the WRX to see how I can do it on them as thet are different on the STI.

I have a lot of breather plumbing down between the intake runners, IC, turbo, and intake. One is the reflux from the BOV I know, the other must be where the oil would come from I'm assuming. I've already got some sort of filter element on the breather assembly so I'm guess that does the same thing? It was part of the original Minnam kits. Last time I had to take the IC and turbo off it was pretty spotless for oil.

I was planning on getting rid of all that completely since I can vent to atmosphere on the BOV without any adverse affects but had to come up with something for the other part. Are you talking about a catch that doesn't dump back into the intake?

So where is the plumbing on the block where this is coming from? I took a look in that jungle of hoses I've got there and couldn't tell which was which. I'm going to be putting the car up this week to do some compression tests on the coolant system (I still have a small leak I smell somewhere) and do some other spring tuning things so I'd like to see where I could put one in.

So I have been looking at catch cans and I was thinking that the water seperator for pnumatics wouldn't nessisarily get enough out, so I was wondering if you used baffeling material in your design matt?

I have 2 STI catch cans done.

    50.00 with all hoses, fittings.

I dont really recommend self install with my kit as it requires re-routing many hoses and pluging where they use to go.

I lost my job, so I'm free on weekends now. If you want to test fit.
I assume the can itself is mounted somewhere? We had an issue in tech inspection with a WRX at the last autocross that had it loose. I think he ziptied it or something.
