WARNING! THE FOLLOWING WAS COMPLETED ON AN OPEN ROAD BY A LESS THAN PROFESSIONAL DRIVER! PLEASE DO NOT TRY THIS ON YOUR OWN! Now that you've been warned, here's a little story that occured this rainy evening. Well, if you guys live around the St. Paul area, or have driven through here, I'm sure you'll know where I'm talking about; Highway 94, east bound, right before it connects with 35E. There's two curves that on any normally dry day, your grandmother could whip over 100 mphs on it. It just so happens that today wasn't any normally dry day, rather a wet gushy day. To make a long story short, I made the first curve without any problems going at about 55 mphs (speed limit, always)... it was then that things went down hill. I was forced to move from the right lane because a semi-truck driver was being ignorant and pushing his way into the highway from the on ramp. He was side by side, and getting closer. I couldn't get ahead of him because there was already another car there. I looked left and saw a spot... the only problem, I'd have to give my baby a little gas to get in. Once I got into the middle lane... ... well, as the title suggests, things didn't go too well for me. I lost a bit of traction and started hydroplaning the rear. I'd say this continued on for about a good 40 feet or so until I gained control after about 5-6 countersteers. I never left the lane, however; just stayed within the lines and swerved a bunch. I never touched the brakes once 'cause that would've been hell for everyone. I slowly let off the gas and worked the car into the direction I needed her to go until I felt her grabbing again. The most degree I might have gotten? I'd say a nice 35 degree angle on either sides. Enough to scare the living daylights out of my passenger. I'm pretty sure things wouldn't have been dragged out that long except for her constant screaming and bloody murder cries, although she had a right to. Afterwords, she informed me that she actually saw her life, or the near future, flash in front of her eyes. She said it was like a newspaper ad; she saw herself all beat up and bloody, but alive. That's a good sign, I guess. So to those of you who aren't willing to save up and buy tires, thinking that you'll save that last penny for your next MOD, think again. I wouldn't want to be going to any funerals... your's or mine! Please, drive safely... always buckle up! I know it rubs on your man tits, *ahem*Hercules, but it'll save your Konoha Forehead Protector. Wouldn't want to scratch that now, would you? Nothing will ever replace a good set of tires... no AWD system is that good!
Glad to hear you're alright. Get that alignment done! I have toe out on my car, that makes it more twitchy but performance for me. I just bought new all season tires. BFGoodrich Traction T/A V 205/55/15
Potenza G009 195/60/15 i am set all year round! this babies rule in the rain. i honestly think i get better traction in the rain.
just a heads up, these tires are Dunlop Graspic DS1's in the stock EVO size... 235-45-17. just ugly awful.
I had that happen once in my turbo 1st Gen back in Aus!!! about 1am driving home on a hwy in teh rain... went to overtake a truck.. oops forgot to look in mirrors.. another car had the same idea only he was doing 120 when I pulled out at 80ish... slammed it into 3rd floored it... hmmm bad idea.. wasnt expecting to be facing the truck going up a hill in the overtaking lane... took about 5 good counter steers and she was going straight... spun all through 3rd and fourth... now it aint a winter tire story..... but still wet weather can get ya when ya aint looking... Glad to hear you and your pass are ok.. Oh yeah and the Car... drive safe... and dont be cheap on tires.. the only 4 pacthes that touch the ground...
Great story! Personally my winter tires do much better in the rain than most summer tires, including mine. I even had the snow tires on for the first day of training at DCTC on purpose. Great job saving the day. I know exactly where your talking about, its a great place to lose tailgaters and wanna be racers.
