I know you are all on the edges of your seats for this...

The official draw for the 2006 World Cup is today in Leipzig. Hosted in part by Heidi Klum.......*drool*

If we get drawn into Brazil's group I will choke a bitch.

    EDIT: lol @ "female dog"

Hey Zola...Forget those guys :p ...I am on the same page with u when it comes to soccer but I am more of a Manchester United or Arsenal when it comes to English clubs. But of course clubs in general I back Real Madrid 100%...but I have not been keepin up for a while so I don't know what's up, like whos still there and who's gone...Interms of Conuntries I would have to go with either France or Brazil or Italy...

Nice!.. we r with Czech and Italy. Both havent been doin that good.. well Czech's are dangerous. I'm already excited about this, even though it is not happening till June. Groups are pretty well balanced IMO. I do think Brazil's got it easy.

Let's make this the official World Cup 06 thread! and yes my money is on the team with these players: Ronaldo, Robinho, Roberto Carlos, Ronaldinho, kaka, dida, etc etc. ok let's add Adriano to that mix too.

Quick thoughts, Group C is the toughest, followed by our Group E. Spain got an embarrassingly easy draw, but of course they will flame out in the knockout rounds as always. Brazil are hands down the favorites and it's their trophy to lose. We would have been better off being drawn with Brazil because finishing 2nd in that group would have been much easier. Oh well. The Czechs are not as strong as they were at Euro 2004 but are still going to be very difficult. Also, I hate Mexico and I hope their plane to Germany explodes in a giant fireball.

How can you like both Manchester United AND Arsenal? That's like being a fan of the Yankees and the Red Sox at the same time.

    ^^ Funny ****.

Seriously, i think he is not a FAN FAN, i think it's more like he likes to watch if they are playing.. atleast thats what i think. Cuz i'll watch any o' those teams any day.

I agree that group C is the toughest. BUT i disagree that Spain has an easy draw. Ukraine is not an easy team to beat. BUT you can always be second and still go ahead.

I think Mexico is a good and maturing team. They are highly rated and their performance in the U-17 was mind bongling. From what I remember, the last team to beat Brazil was indeed Mexico (national team not U-17).

In any case Brazil are favorites.. I just hope they are not as controversial as they were in the last worldcup (Rivaldo anyone? lol).

haha, Rivaldo...his career took a nosedive after his disgraceful act against Turkey. A real shame actually, he was an incredible player at his peak, but since he got that guy sent off he's really been in decline. I am strongly against play acting.

    Zola,
Yes, same here. Brazil has a long history of U-17/U-21 copying the national team and I was afraid that this play acting will follow. But things have not been that bad.

    tbone,

YES! kahn 'the wall' is still the goalie and captain of bayern munich. I think he also captains the national side.

According to Wikipedia, "He is known as King Kahn or Kahn, the Titan for his prowess in the game."

I usually do not resurrect old threads...... but as me and zola are probably the only guys interested in Soccer, i am assuming no one will care.

Before any football (ok in this thread football = soccer, can you handle that?) worldcup, all the sports companies usually come up with their best ad campaigns. (mostly addidas, nike, puma..etc).

This time Nike has started this while Joga Bonnito thing .. which is kinda cool as the ads have one of the best footballers in the world showing off their skills. this is one of my favorites, with some cgi....

Yeah, i am already rounding people at work that want to watch it. ABC, ESPN, and ESPN2 will be broadcasting it in HD. I am sure Foxsports and Fox soccer channel will have reruns.

I have a bbcsport worldcup wallchart in my cube to mark the winners/losers of the tourney.

Btw.. FSC (fox soccer channel) has been covering all the the groups on the weekly basis and have claimed group C to be the group of death. IMO, group E is much more of a candidate. What do you think?

Group C is the tougher of the two, as it's much harder to pick which 2 will make it out. I have no problem saying that Italy and the Czech Republic will waltz out of our group with little difficulty. I figure we'll pick up 4 points at the absolute maximum, and I wouldn't rule out only getting 2.

The USA squad is much weaker this time around and in comparison to 2002 this tournament will be a major step backwards.

hey Now the Aussies do pretty good.. well they used too... not sure anymore..

I actually went to school with Mark Viduka.. not sure of the spelling but he is a striker for Middlesbrough FC.... He was gonna beat up a guy who was hitting on my girlfriend.. ha ha ha

My college had all the Australian Institute of Sports Athletes studying there... My brother was a swimmer who could beat Grant Hackett and Scott ?? but he had a shoulder reconstruction and went out of swimming...

Hmmm.. I don't know. I think we have a pretty decent team.
Donovan, Reina, McBride, Eskandarian, Edu, Beasly.. i mean it is not a weak team. However, i do agree that it would be almost impossible for us to make it through.
P.S: The semi between Liv and Chels was awesome. Sorry they didn't make it. :emo:

No offense, but they usually don't make it past the second round and it would be very hard for them to do so again. On the other hand, Australia is the benchmark of Field Hockey, Cricket, and other commonwealth games.

Viduka is a really nice player indeed.

Viduka's head is shaped like a cube, and he's quite fat (or is it big boned?). Looking at him makes me laugh.

Edu is not going to be in the squad, Eskandarian won't be either to the best of my knowledge, and while I think Beasley is quite good he has played very little for PSV this season.

Our midfielders tend to be OK, our attackers apart from McBride a little goal-shy (i.e., not recognized goal scoring threats at the international level), and our defenders are definitely the area where I'm most worried. They might be good players if you are strictly taking about MLS but against the quality of World Cup sides I think they will be overmatched.

I do think Bruce Arena has done a terrific job over the years given the talent at his disposal.

Decisions have not been made yet. The official team will be announced on 2nd May. here is the pool:
    http://www.ussoccer.com/common/stContent.jsp_16-MNT2006.html

    +1

Couldn't agree with you more. I think our strength is not in names, but in the whole team. Bruce has made sure that everyone has well defined roles.

Alright, i'm off to watching barca vs. AC Milan. Go Ronaldinho!!!!

Yes, the official team has not been announced yet, but I will bet a paycheck that Adu and Eskandarian will not be selected in the final 23. Most of the squad is solidified and there are really only a handful of places up for grabs. The players competing for those spots are the ones who have been heavily involved throughout the qualifying campaign--so that rules out those two.

See http://www.soccertimes.com/wagman/2006/apr27.htm for a decent prediction of the final team.
