    Hi,

I just got a post card in the mail advising me of a 30,000 mile major service that needs to be done on my 2004 WRX. There is a long list that adds up to several hundreds of dollars and I was wondering what really needs to be done from the long list. What might be some things I could do myself?

    Here is the list:

    inspect drive belts
    inspect cam belt
change engine oil and filter $25.95 - I already do that myself
perform a cooling system flush $89.95
    inspect cooling system, hoses, connections
perform fuel line, throttle body and intake manifold inspection
    replace fuel filter $55.95
replace air filter $14.95 - No need to be done since I have a K&N air filter
replace spark plugs $225.25 - I understand they are platinum and don't need to be replaced until 60,000
replace front and rear differential fluids $61.95
perform a transmission flush (is applicable) $99.95
perform a brake fluid flush $89.95
inspect brake pads, rotars, axle boots and axle joints $39.95
    inspect drums and brake shoes
inspect parking brake, cables, and brake lines
    inspect clutch opeation (if applicable)
    inspect steering and suspension
front and rear wheel bearing lubricant
supplimental restraint system (every 10 years)
    rotate and inspect tires $26.50
    inspect battery and cable
    inspect brake lines and cables
perform a brake caliper service $79.95
inspect power steering rack, pump and hoses
replace the manual transmission fluid (if applicable) $69.95
    install collant conditioner $4.25
    replace pcv valve $59.95
perform a standard four wheel balance $59.95
    perform an alignment $89.95
replace the hydraulic clutch fluid $29.95
replace the power sterring fluid $25.95
    comprehensive vehicle inspections fee $49.95

    Thanks for any advise.

    :)

i just did it at BP Subaru.
The only thing i dropped from the "menu" is having them balance the tires. The spark plugs weren't done, as it's not due till 60k.
My ass is still sore, but not as bad as it could have been.

$538 out the door with the MNSuby discount and bringing most of my own fluids. (The good stuf)

I did my 30k service for less than $150 if i remember correctly. And I changed plugs too which added like $30 to my total.

    These are the neccesary things:

Lol! fuel filters are like $15 bucks max. takes 5 minutes if you do it first thing in the morning before starting your car.

You're right, skip that, they are platinum and listed on the 60k service. only 30k plugs on RS becuase they're copper. and 225 is rape for a spark plug replacement.

another $15 dollars of fluid and a half hour type of thing.

again, $10 in fluid, some spare time and a friend to hit the brake pedal.

easy to do and free, unless you need another cv boot or something, or a rotor needs resurfacing (which they will chare you like $100 for..)

    ummm

gear oil is like 4 bucks a quart. your tranny takes like 4.5 quarts... drain plug in the bottom, filler in the top. I just did it for the first time last weekend.

Highway robbery. PCV valves are like $5 maximum, literally a 30 second installation.

totally at your discretion, probably not worth it.

That's probably all of what you really need.

    Hi,

Thanks for all of the input.

PCV valves are like $5 maximum, literally a 30 second installation.

Isnt' the PCV valve on the left side of the motor near the front about half way down? What parts besides the intercooler have to be taken off to get to it? What all is involved?

If you are really serious about this, buy all the necessary parts and hold an install day in a warm garage with food, drinks, and laughter. People will come to help you replace and install. You'll also learn how to do them yourself after watching and doing them. It'll be a good learning experience. :)

If you havn't yet, go to www.Scoobymods.com and read the procedures on what to do. They're not hard to do; they just take time to get done.

ROFL, Let me fix that for you...

If you are really serious about this, buy all the necessary parts and hold an install day in a warm garage with food, drinks, and laughter. Dozens of people will indicate that they will be there to help out. The list will get long and you will start wondering how you will beer and feed them all. You'll buy a keg of beer because it is cheaper than buying 3 cases of domestic piss beer. Then, on the day you have decided to have this install meet, one person will show up early and you will begin doing your work. Then Erik (AWDImprezaL) will show up and do most of the work for you because he is a maniac...as the hours pass, you will notice that only about 3 or 4 more people will arrive from your list of about 20. By 11pm the job will be complete and everyone will leave except the 2 hardcore drinkers and you will be left wondering how you are going to finish a whole keg of beer on your own. The next morning you will curse the no-shows for marooning you on your little garage island with 8 gallons of beer and 3 dozen hotdogs and you will forever be soured on the idea of hosting an MNSubaru event because no one ever shows up when they say they will. Months later, when others are trying to organize an event, you will be recruited to step into the thread a week before the event to make a post indicating that "this might end up being another hand-raiser's event!" so that all the on-the-fence members will feel the peer-pressure and hopefully grow some hair and actually attend an event that they said they were going to attend. Then a few people will complain about your post...don't worry, these are just the people that were butthurt by your claims of hand-raising (they were going to bail, but your hand-raiser post persuaded them not to). Then the event will go well, and you will feel at ease with your membership in MNSubaru.
