Interesting, but obviously a load of speculation. "with the new WRX, a return [to WRC] looks possible". Ummm......no. not with a boxer engine and longitudinal layout. "This image, revealing how one artist sees the new WRX". So, not based on anything factual, then. The comment about the new car launch in 2014. I think that's probably the FT-86, not the WRX. I've heard that the WRX would be more loosely based on the impreza platform a few times.
http://argent.fia.com/web/fia-publi...C12577EE0064D37A/$FILE/WRC Regs&Appx 2011.pdf Per the 2011 FIA World Rally Championship Sporting Regulations. I'm not going to read the whole thing, but maybe if you made a 1.6T Boxer engine it would qualify. I think it has to be inline though, but I'm not sure.
"A coupe WRX is not unprecedented -- the Japanese-market 1988 Impreza 22b is the WRX's spiritual predecessor" wow, the 22b was in 1988.... that's like 10 years ahead of it's time!
I'm understand the current WRC rules about the 1.6 subaru has had a ej16 before http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_EJ_engine I'm questioning the boxer engine part.
My understanding of the WRC class (derived from the Super-2000 FIA class, but with a 1.6l engine), is that all the cars are very similar in design. Part of that means the layout has to be the same, and the engines/transmissions have to be built by one of a few companies. They are all transverse-mounted inline-4s.
Not dodging the swear filter here but that sounds as gay as a pink fanny pack full of *****. RIP WRC!
