Curious if anyone has done any sort of modification to allow the key fob to actually pop the hatch instead of just unlocking it? I know that the sedan has this feature and it's likely receiving different information from the BCM (Body Control Module) or Body Integrated Unit, and reprogramming those seems a bit out of the question here. I'd (very obviously) prefer that this works separately from the unlock function. I.e. I don't want the hatch to pop open when I unlock all the doors. I know that it will only pop open a little bit, I'm planning to install 20" 150# struts so that in theory it should automatically lift. found some foundational information here.. https://www.iwsti.com/threads/rear-hatch-struts-upgrade-solved-got-it-to-work.205713/
Interesting concept. Have you looked into whether or not the one from the sedan can be swapped into the hatch? IIRC, you have to tap the trunk twice to pop it on the sedan? @minnesotanice ?
Is the "feature" on the sedan just due to the fact that the trunk lid is under spring tension when shut and it just pops open when you unlock it because that's the only function of the lock back there? I'd think it'd be a little more in depth on the hatches because they have more of a legit door handle like operation in addition to a lock (basically it's two steps/operations instead of one). FWIW, all of my cars are 20+ years old and very bare bones when it comes to creature comforts and technology, so I might unknowingly just be talking out my ass here. Haha.
I think that it’s both. You sound like you are both on to something here and talking out of your ass.
See the funny thing is the systems are wired the same. The motor mechanism (lock/latch) is the same. It doesn’t actually lock. When the hatch is “locked” the button on the hatch doesn’t receive power, ergo doesn’t open. A22 from the bmu sends the signal to the latch to open it. the button has constant 12v going to one wire and then connects that to a ground? Therefore shorting back to the bmu? Which signals to open the latch? makes me think that the bmu is programmed differently per car.. or per keyless entry module. im going to see if I can trace what signal is coming from the keyless module to trigger the hatch unlock and see if I can send it to the latch open
Curious if anyone has used one of the higher end obd2 scanners or the Subaru specific ones and if they have the ability to adjust settings in the keyless entry module or anything like this? will try looking at the keyless module today to see if any wires send out a momentary 12v when the hatch button is pressed. feom the entirety of the fsm it looks like the keyless module communicates with the biu with a singular wire…
Pressing the button on the hatch chirps the hazards and the little derpy horn, then sends constant signal to the hatch button above the license plate.. but that’s about all I can tell.
Wasn’t able to trace anything. it sends the signal to the bcm over one wire. the part numbers for the keyless module are different from hatch to sedan… so I’m thinking that’s it. Found one on eBay for 18$ I’ll probably have to reprogram the fobs and the TPMs but luckily I have a programmer to do that… Silly the lengths we go. Or maybe the lengths I go. Lol
Part 1 complete: Ordered some 20” 150# struts from Amazon. Open the hatch and it automatically goes all the way up. With some gusto, I’ll add. I bet 125# would be plenty. if I get bored, probably, I’ll order some and find out. New sedan keyless entry module gets here tonight, hopefully I can install this week and get the key fob to work.
Replaced the Keyless entry module with one from a sedan. reprogrammed the TPMS as it's the same module, luckily I have an auto for that. reprogrammed the key fob, with the painstaking process as I don't have an OBD2 for that. push the trunk button. Same thing as before. hazards flash and trunk is unlocked and doesn't open. Back to the electrical drawing board.
Heavens. I've really opened a can of worms here. The BIU needs to be adjusted from the back end, there's no electrical work around. So after much scrolling and rabbit-holing I've gone ahead and ordered a VXDIAG VCX SE for Subaru and I'm going to pickup a stupid little marketplace laptop running windows pro 10. From there the VXDIAG comes with SSMIII and I should be able to access a litany of different settings. I was just going to try to find a master tech for Subaru and have them use the SSM5 that they have, but I've read in certain places that the settings get reset when you disconnect the battery, so I don't want to risk that being the case.
