I'm looking to buy a WRX fairly soon. I've heard some things about transmissions being somewhat of a problem. It's going to be a daily driver and occasionally driving halfway hard. With a budget of around 18,000 should I worry to much about a bad transmission or any other part?
Don't buy bugeyes. Or swap the 6spd into one. Could budget that easy on a cheaper older wrx you can have leftover money for the good tranny, tbe, etc..
Well I've read the 02s were garbage. 03 got a little better, but I'm not real sure the difference of the others.
For $18k you could get a hawkeye with some money leftover for mods or in case of trans or engine failure lol. Otherwise I would look at '09+ and they might be slightly out of your price range.
dude some people travel around the country for a deal. it depends on how willing you are to get what youd like
You are probably the worst person to be on a forum. I'm a newbie looking for objective advice and you are just throwing subjective info left and right.
tehfuzz is mostly harmless. But he's mostly right as well. I know people have traveled several states to go look at a car they were interested in. Several came home with no car as it didn't meet expectations. Also, unless you are capable of removing and installing a transmission on your own and you have dreams of modding a Subaru I'd probably keep money on hand for a 6speed swap. You should be able to find a nice wrx considerably under your budget allowing you to save for the inevitable transmission replacement. The o4's and newer are slightly better but still nothing to brag about. really these cars are only for people who like to wrench on their own stuff because it's gonna break.
If you find one you like have it taken to the local Subaru dealer for an inspection. You'll pay for it but you will at least have had something to go by other than the owners word.
You are probably the dumbest noob in the history of noobs if you think fuzz is bad. Unwad your panties, take your ritalin and stop getting so worked up over a joke.
Hey, I am like most people on here. Always willing to help when people are asking for it. No need to bite the hand that feeds in this situation. I am trying to point out some of the things to consider, buddy.
OP You seriously have a budget of 18,000 for a WRX? That's STI territory. Why not just buy an STI? Also, to answer the questions: 02 Transmissions were the weakest 03 Trans got an update and was a little stronger 06 Saw another update with the synchros. None of these transmissions will put up with abuse very well. If you treat them right, they work just fine. If you try Hondalaunching them, they'll **** their guts out sooner or later.
Hey Nick Carter, why did you go to a gay club instead of going to your own sister's funeral? It sounds to me like YOU are the worst person on this forum: http://perezhilton.com/2012-02-06-n...ay-club-on-day-of-sister-funeral#.UytehvldWSo
Nick Carter, if you want a REALLY good subaru you need to contact Fabio over on Craigslist. He is right up your alley...aka a flaming homogay.
Would you buy a house without looking at it or a walk through? No. Don't be that moron that buys a car because the seller says it's good and he took care of it. Ask for maintenance records, have the seller drive it to see his driving habits and take it to a third party for an inspection.
But it says "clean title! Adult owned! Never launched!" the car must be perfect! What could possibly go wrong??
The reason why I bashed the user was because of the sarcastic response, not because I disagreed with him. Also I wanted to be sure it wasn't a good idea to buy without test driving.
I found a WRX and an STI similarily priced. The WRX has 40,000 miles and is a 2011 the STI is a 2009 with 65,000. Both is great shape, Which is more likely to last longer?
I've heard WRX's are the way to go if you don't want a track car. Is that mostly true or is an STI better on the road?
Thats a hard one. On one hand you shouldn't have to worry about the tranny in the STI but you might have to worry about the engine. Really it comes down to how well either has been maintained or if they have been beaten on or modified (not always easy to tell without careful inspection in person).
hes right on this. you have to do what feels right for you. after all it is going to be YOUR car , not ours.
Given those two choices and having no other information I would select the 2011 WRX. Doing some research is a great idea to understand the differences. Are you in a hurry to purchase?
Wow, given the last few threads that new members have started I'm now certain we need some sort of 3 question entrance exam for the forum to preclude the neanderthals. At this rate it's going to be long painful spring/ summer car season.
If you are worried about a transmission failure by daily driving and some back road fun...you should probably buy an automatic and learn how to drive stick in a Honda.
But then who would we ridicule for being tarded??? Oh wait we still have Mike. Lol Implement the mandatory IQ test!
I still love my sedan, but in hindsight I wished I had held out and got a hatchback. Everyone's traveling needs are different.
