I know this is a WTB thread but I just want to put my 2 cents in. It's pretty rare that you will find a decently working 03+ Forester under $5000 with acceptable mileage (under 160K). I've seen one or two newer Legacies in the $6000 range before but they had really high miles and were scooped up really quickly. Still good luck with your search. I hope you find one.

As a XT owner, your pricing point is a bit higher. You guys can sell your cars at a pretty premium, especially the manuals. An 04 with a few mods will still sell in the $15k mark.

As for the NAs, Subaru unfortunately still has rather good resale value. You may opt to stick to the older chassis to save a little cost. Edmunds lists the 2001-2002 in the $5k ballpark, but the 03 is closer to $6.5k. All Subarus just hold value pretty well, and people do tend to hold onto their cars for some time because little goes wrong.

Good luck with the search though. I'll point you over to www.subaruforester.org too if you don't mind widening your search beyond our state, plus there's always www.autotrader.com

Thanks for all the input , just bought a silver 5speed 2003 forester x on autotrader.com from a lady with 110,000k, all subaru dealer service records from day 1 (5miles), timing belt was done at 100k and so was the rest she spared no expense to what the dealer recommended, average oil change $85(yikes) .The only thing it might need is a clutch and some new bushings in the linkage or drive-train shiftes smooth but it a small rattle at higher rpm cruising.
    purchase price $4300 WINNING!?

Wow that's a damn good deal. We are kind of in the same boat looking for just a cheaper NA Subaru for winters but can also haul some things when needed
