I have an old Mongoose D60R, it's a full-suspension mtn bike, it had decent components for the time, about 1998 I think. I'd want $50 for it. I just need to switch the rear tire, it has a smooth tire on it now because I was using it with the bike trainer. I'll go take a picture of it.
Look around at some local bike shops. A lot of places carry used brand name bikes. One on One, off of Washington in the warehouse district has a bunch of bikes in their basement. Anything from $100-$4000 in their basement on consignment/trade in/etc. I don't want to start a pretentious bike argument, but I would highly recommend a brand name bike (I have had great luck with Giant and a used one could be had for that price).
