I am trying to pull a radio, without breaking it, out of an 02 protoge. This is a Ford radio and requires 2 U tools to do. If anyone has them I really need them. I can buy them straight up or just borrow them and return them to you the next day.
You can do it without tools... and the tools kind of suck for it. I tried them with mine (Protege5 03) and could only get one side. You can do it without any tools in like 30 seconds if you know what you're doing. Basically, there are springy metal plates on the sides of the stereo, which need to be pushed in to remove it. If you remove the glove box, you can easily reach back around and push the passenger side plate in. For the driver side, it's easier if you remove the plastic panel under the steering wheel, then you can reach under the dash and push the driver side plate in. Reach in there and feel your way around, and you'll find the metal plate on the side of the stereo. While pushing down the metal plate, push the stereo out at the same time. You need to get the plate past the lip it latches behind. You might have to alternate between the two sides and work the stereo out a little bit. Once you get the stereo out a bit, you can wiggle it out the rest of the way by just pulling on it. There's two plugs on the back you have to disconnect to remove it. Really, http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/ is a better place for protege answers
I have 4 of those U tools, if you want to give them a try. However, like I said, they didn't help me and I ended up just doing it by hand.
walmart stocks them for a few bucks if you have one nearby. They have a little notch on the end, which helps get them into the right spot, so it isn't quite like just using a bent hanger. Still a PITA whether you have them or not. I used a combination of the U-tools + pulling the glovebox on my Pro5.
