Taking my car to BIR in September and I think I'd benefit from a set of track specific pads. I don't really care what the life of the pad is as long as the price reflects the amount if usuable material left. Let me know what you have!
What day are you going? I'm planning on going on 9/8 and 9/22 as long as no work trips pop up. Hope to see you there! HP+'s are good, but still experience some fad after a good 10+ minute session. They are far superior to stock though. Hit up Diversified Cyrogenics in Burnsville - they offer an MNSubaru discount and can get Hawk pads.
Yes call Mark, if you are going to try to run two different pads on the same rotors you want to make sure you have compatible compounds.
Good call. I actually have beencurious about running two different kinds of pads on the same rotors. It would be nice to have different sets for autox and full track.
TMF- Headin up there on 9/8. That would be super cool if we got to race each other around the track! glen- good point; I will give Mark a call tomorrow. Anyone got a used set that may work for me?? Can't really pony up the cash for new pads at the moment.
I have a set on my Wrx (hawk Hp+ 05sti brembos) if you want to come pull them off and put them back on when your done the car is sitting on jack stands I'll let you use them for a track day to see if you like them. I'm over in st Paul. Pm me if you like.
Sounds good. I'm in no rush. They just have to be back on the car before the snow flies. Soooo meh 3 weeks lol
I'm attending the performance driving school. My fiance's uncle is the owner so I got a gift certificate for my birthday. I'm not exactly sure how everything works as far as groups. I'm assuming I will run across you as we'll be there on the same day (maybe).
They separate the drivers into three groups (beginner, intermediate, advanced) and each group has their own sessions throughout the day. They normally have open track at the end of day, where anyone can hit up the track. We'll definitely run across each other...I just need to pull the trigger and get registered!
We'll run across each other when I'm flying by you on the track ! OooooooooooOOOOoooooooo But serioulsy.. anyone have any used track pads they want to sell? There has got to be someone out there.......
^^yea bring it on And I almost forgot about this guy...I was thinking about picking up his HP+'s, but never did. He might still have them... http://mnsubaru.com/threads/2008-sti-part-out.43900/#post-731635
I've heard a number of people recommend that you keep a set of hardcore race pads for this - you take the street/autoX pads off, put on the hardcore pads and drive around for a half hour with light braking intentionally not heating up the brakes/pads so they grind off the old pad compound layer (comes out almost as nice as burnishing them on a machine), then swap on your track pads. Reverse the process at the end of the weekend.
This would be ideal, but I'm swapping from StopTech Street Performance to the HP+ pads the day prior to driving up the BIR. My question is- do I need to perform any type of bedding procedure once the HP+ are on the car to obtain their maximum effect? Looking for opinions from more seasoned track drivers..
There is definitely a bedding process for HP+'s. The instructions that Hawk provides are for new pads on new rotors. I'm not sure if the process would be different for used pads on used rotors....definitely need to be bedded though. Usually the process is several "firm" stops, starting from about 30-40 down to 10mph, then 40-50 down to ~10 mph, etc. Usually if mine starting acting up or have a lot of pad material on the rotors, a few firm stops usually cleans them right up.
Assuming you are putting them on a STi, HP+ should be an acceptable pad for the track for a beginner. For advanced drivers it is possible to over heat the pads. Make sure you have a good performance fluid, you will likely boil your stock stuff, especially if you have not had a brake flush recently. That is a more scary situation then not having a "track pad". You will get put in beginner if you have not had a previous track day experience. Just focus on having fun, the line, safety, and not going "fast".
I have a set of used Raybesto ST43 which is the #1 choice for STi's and EVO's for weekend track events. It still has about less 50% of the life left. They work amazingly well for heavier vehicles. I also have a brand new set of Hawk DTC-60 for serious drivers. I'll be at BIR HPDS on Sept 9 and you're more then welcome to try and pass me! hehe
I have a set of HP+ I'm borrowing for Monday. Should give me a good benchmark in where to go for a purchase.
