Looking for a long block for the girlfriends 08 outback, auto.

Around January 2019, it spun a conrod bearing during a really hard start in the freezing cold (-40F), and amazingly enough, has ran ~20k since. I have 3 NA EJ's that are garbage and I don't feel like rebuilding them. Regardless, I feel I should be better prepared now.

I considered buying new from Subaru but I figured I would check here to see if anyone knows a better deal.

I have a 2008 Outback that I'm debating parting out (front end collision), 178k, runs great. But, you may want to do some further research on 05 vs 06-09 ej253. My understanding is the 05 did not have AVLS (Active Valve Lift System) but 06-09 Outbacks did. They are not interchangeable.

Off the top of my head I'm not certain from what other models/years engines would be interchangeable for your 05 (aside from an 05 Outback).
