Hello MNSubaru family, I'm looking to buy a first Subaru for my teenage daughter. Here's what we're looking for: 1. Legacy/Outback wagon, or Forester. 2. Auto transmission 3. Solid runner 4. No major leaks 5. Minimal body rust would be nice, but it's Minnesnowta, so we kinda know what to expect. We don't need a project, something with a blown engine, or bad head gaskets. She's taking college courses next year, and needs a reliable form of transportation. Higher miles are fine, just as long as it's a decent runner that you'd feel comfortable putting your own child behind the wheel of. I could go the Craigslist route, but I feel that the MnSubaru family tend to take better care of their cars, and aren't typically just out to turn a quick buck. If you have something that fits the bill, please let me know! ***Budget $1500-$2000***
I would add a set of snow tires to the budget, no matter what kind of car you end up getting. $1500 to $2000 is gonna be a real challenge to find something both safe and reliable. Good luck.
Yeah he's right Be careful with Craigslist. I bought my first Subaru from a guy on there for a little over 1k and the transmission took a massive **** about a week after I bought it. Hopefully someone here has something for sale for you!
You should definitely up the budget and HP and pick up my WRX for her. She really should know how to drive a manual...what better way than on a 300HP Subaru?
Somehow I saw this coming. Pretty flexible. Not a huge rush, but if something came along that I felt was a good deal, I'd be interested. She has to do 3 "behind the wheel" sessions, and needs to drive with mom & dad for 15 hrs between sessions. Then, she can test, so we've got a little time.
Just picked this up for my daughter. Had a pre-buy inspection @ JM today, and needs a little bit of work. Front tie rod, front pads & rotors, pcv valve, but nothing major, and overall got a clean bill of health. Clean Carfax, lady driven and was babied it's entire life. Not too bad for a 20 yr old Subaru.
It's a proud moment, and at the same time, it's scary as hell knowing that she'll be driving herself around very soon.
I bet!! It will be interesting when our girls get that age. The Joy of the Lord is our strength! Hahaha!
Nice starter car! That sticker on the back window looks off center though. Grrrrrr It could be that there's a logo or something to the left of "University" maybe. Also missing a Y. It's a Legac!
Biggest issue is no cell phone usage while in the car and on the road, none whatsoever. Glad I don't have to go through this phase again - with the stepdaughter it was pre-smartphone days. Good luck to all involved.
To bad cell jammers are illegal....wire one into a circuit that is only live when the vehicle parking brake is disabled.
You would think that they, the phone programmers/designers, could make a feature where the phone detects it’s in motion and goes into a sleep mode or something. Smart phone my ass.
I just want it to block calls/texts/emails/intranetz while driving. Maps, music/audio files, and GPS would be fine. And i want to be able to control the kids phone from mine so that i can shut it down while she’s driving remotely. Is that too much to ask!? Lol
We had this chat in the gdtd one day, I suggested this exact thing. It appears to be a bad idea because law enforcement relies on most of the same tech, and it can't be turned off just for certain people...ie civilians. At least not yet Also it would have no way of knowing if you were driving, or a passenger. That could get silly very fast. I still think it is a great idea, though
In drivers ED they said that if you are caught using the phone for anything other than GPS, you can have your license taken for a period of time. The restrictions on drivers under 18 is pretty impressive. No more than 1 passenger after a certain time, no driving after a certain time, passenger age limits, etc. As for the cell phone thing, my plan was to just tell her that the cell phone companies, in conjunction with the insurance companies, have a device that goes in the car, and sends a real time report to my phone, letting me know what her phone is doing, while the car is in motion. The insurance companies already have a device that goes in the OBD2 port, and records driving habits, so my extra little fib should be believable. Since I pay for her phone, and her car, the idea of me taking them away from her is all the motivation she needs to focus on driving, and leave the phone in the cup holder. She knows the consequences of screwing it up. She's a straight A student, with her head on straight, and really good friends. I'm not worried about her. The younger daughter though, who's 13.....she's the reason I have grey hair, and an indefinite ulcer. "There but for the grace of God"!
I don't know, maybe? I haven't had a chance to be that yet. Which is actually a good thing. I don't know that I'd approve of either of my brothers having any children at this time in their lives.
Lol, typical iphone user... my pixel 2 (and most recent android builds) has a toggleable setting for this.
Finally had some time to do a good cleaning of the interior, and scrape off the glue from the old, illegal window tint. Discovering things that I never knew this car came equipped with. A 6 disc CD changer under the passenger seat?! Also, found this little gem buried in the glove box! 1998 Subaru Outback: The gift that keeps on giving.
And the cruise control is a button on the dash. I almost like it more than my '05 H6. Now she just needs rumbles! #goals.
If ya ever wanna sell that bug deflector... I'm in the market for one Clean car. I love my 1st/2nd gen. Now time for you to schedule tint
