Hi all .. again.. having lots of fun, aren't I? I have been doing some searches for this part ^^ - and coming up empty every single time. I talked to a tranny guy who had a transmission for me but the diff does not come with it. :emo: The person I talked to seemed kinda flakey, anyway, but it was all I could find in the area. They said that they don't have a diff, but they have a tranny (??) oh well, moving on. I think that this is what I need - basically the car grinds when it's in drive, and it's NOT the transmission, it's coming from the diff - but if there is something else that would make this noise, I'm all for testing it out. We ran plenty of tests over the weekend, and that was what we kept coming back to. I have found the part on https://www.subarugenuineparts.com/oe_parts_cat.html Guess I need to find someone with a hookup ... *looks toward the "hookups" thread*
I have a FWD tranny......but it's a 5spd. Not sure if they run the same differential up front with the stubs..... I have my '99 Impreza L AWD tranny all opened up....it just has a broken 3-4 shift fork. I am thinking about rebuilding it sometime when I have time.....make it RWD? lolz There IS an Impreza at Rosemount UPULLRPARTS and that Impreza is a '93 FWD AT just like yours. The only thing is they poke a hole in the tranny pan underneth. Not SURE if the tranny is good or not, when the car came in it looked VERY clean inside out, not too clean now since my scaveging. BUT that tranny would be the one to get. Total should be about $100 w/ labor being your part. They are not hard to take out. I can simple go down there and pull the tranny off no problem.
HAH! I looked at that site, and that impreza came up, and i thought "oh it's probably harvested to the shell by now" UPull was an idea I was tossing around too, but I thought the parts were not interchangeable. If they are, I'm there uhm .. yesterday haha What I'm happy about is I can tinker with the old one, and take it apart and loook around ... I love to see how stuff works. But most of all, I love looking at gears ... mmm.. spinny .. shiny parts ... I am soooo afraid of what these gears look like inside this .. it's been grinding for some time. The dude I bought it from said that he took it to a dealer and they were unable to diagnose it. I don't believe him  I bought it with the intention of doing some work on it though .. I knew it was going to be a project.
well i have a AWD auto tranny from my 95LX in teh garage. it is broken, and i am pretty sure its something in the gearbox. so the front diff should be a decent shape. if it will work let me know. i am planning on taking apart the tranyn to see what broke, and to gather shiny paper wieghts ;-)
YES that would work very well! Can I get it this weekend? PM me and let me know how to go about this! I am hoping to grab it Saturday, as that is one of the first days I have available where I can recruit my buddy to lift things for me .. Those shiny gears make great paperweights, but be sure to clean them off first.
i dont see why that wouldnt work. are you just intersted int eh front diff or the whole tranny? so far i havent had a chance to crack it open, and i might not get a chace for awhile, unless i get creative on friday.
JUST the front diff .. the rest of the tranny seems to be fine, but of course I won't know until I get that borked diff off of there and put a new one on. If the dude really did drive it for 15K miles like he said, it may turn into a bigger project, but hopefully *crosses fingers* that is all it needs to stop the sound from happening ... thanks!!
Oh scary! Well ... It shouldn't be too hard. The way it looks, it should just .. unbolt. And be heavy. I bet it's heavy! Then again, we know things are never as easy as they look  Let me know if you need help, we could have a harvesting party (just looked at your impreza pics ... we have the same color!)
^ yeah i havent really looked at it so see how the front diff comes off. the tranny is pretty heavy. it take 2 people to lift it, but 1 person can slide it around ok. just looked at a picture. shouldnt be too bad. looks like you will be getting a decent portion the bell housing with it, unless you just want the guts.
I think it's probably a good idea to get the whole shebang, bellhousing included, because then we can just remove mine and bolt this one on ... probably not a good idea to play with spinny shiny parts right now
