Due to an unforseen curb (really put a damper on the evening) I am in the market for one stock 16 inch rim, preferably unbent. Will go on my bug eye. Let me know if you have one and what you want for it. I am in the cities (uptown) till tuesday and can pick it up after 6. I would like to get this taken care of without having to drive back home without my spare on the whole way. Thanks!
you def want to get it taken care of ASAP, you will smoke your center diff in a hurry running around on the spare, and a new diff is 700+ plus install.
Thanks for the info, I appreciate it! I won't drive it much (if at all) on the spare in that case. I'll post a picture of it tomorrow for you to judge. I was going less than 5 miles per hour when I hit. I took another look at it and it doesn't look as bad as I initially thought. The rim doesn't look bent just curb rashed badly and theres a small impression on the tire itself (the tires are around 1000 miles) how bad is that? Does that generally mean the tire is shot? I might need to replace that as well I guess, I don't really feel like taking chances with my wheels.
erik is very right about the spare. We cant really tell you much about the tire as there are a lot of factors that go into what damage could have occured. You'll need your new wheel mounted professionally anyway, so I'd have a technician at the shop take a look at the old tire. They may be able to reuse it as is, or fix it. I'm sure someone will have a replacement for you, the wrx wheels are common around here.
Everybody's hitting curbs lately. I have a Forester wheel (00-01 style) I'll sell ya. It's a different offset but it'll work.
Why would Subaru put a spare wheel in that would cause a catastrophic failure of a significant mechanical part ?
Because it's only supposed to be driven on for a short while, until you can fix your real wheel/tire.
Alright here are a couple pics, the best I could get with my camera, you can judge for yourself. and another, it doesn't seem to be bent at all As I stated earlier I have about 140 mile drive home coming up soon, I realize I probably need a new rim, but if I can't find one before then what should I do?
If it is holding air and you don't feel any shimmy from being out of round you should be fine. Chicks dig scars. Those wheels can take a beating IME.
It holds air, I was 2 blocks from where I'm staying so I drove it there and its been sitting there since last night. Still at 32 psi when I took pics.
I say run it. Bring it to a car wash to get all that snow off the car and take it down a nice clear stretch of road to see if you get a shimmy. If you don't notice anything then I'd run it. Heck I probably wouldn't even replace that wheel.
+1. I've got a handful of rims with bent lips (I have a shedful of wheels at this point), and all work just fine. If it's just damage to the outside of the lip, and e tire doesn't shake or lose air, it's just cosmetic.
Thanks for your input guys, I did what you said (washed and drove it) and I didn't notice a shimmy or anything, I put on probably 40 miles today with it like that and it drove fine. There was no drop in pressure or anything. Thanks for all the input especially about running the spare I had no clue it would do that.
I had the same thing happen to me when i hit a curb earlier this summer, i couldn’t see a bend in the rim any were. that is until i swapped it with my snow rims and tires and the inside of it was quite bent. should i be worried about anything after driving with a small shake at speed for the last part of the summer? also, i need to replace that rim as well for summer!! Hey Mr.Boracus if i find a deal on one soon to buy around town i'll let you know!
lol good one. you enjoying more powah? Thanks Rusty, let me know if you come across something, it'd be nice to have one for peace of mind factor! mnstilynwrx- I parked next to you last night in the bethel lot, did you have some fun in the lot?
