I have a stoopid reciever that plays dvds and is DD 5.1 suround, but it doesn't have any video inputs or an optical input..... what I'm trying to do: I got a PS3, and a HDTV 1080i.... and I think I need a reciever I can send the HDMI Cable to and then send the video output to the Screen via optical cable or component video..... I want dd5.1 audio and the 1080i video, and I can not do this with what I currently have.
u can still send sound out though the avi cables that was i do. hdmi to my tv. avi cables for sound to my sround sound. in setting of ps3 u can pick audio output at avi cables video output setting i pick hdmi
True 5.1 will require a digital signal. Optical will do it, so will HDMI. An optical cable will carry 5.1 DD just fine. Our DVD player, PS2 and HTPC carry surround sound just fine through optical cables.
I was thinking HDMI from the PS3 to the reciever, the component video out from the reciever to TV, Or I could just get a reciver with Optical input, and run Optical from PS3 to Reciever, and HDMI from the PS3 to the TV....
component 1(rbg cables) with the sound cables. will that work for digital? rbg to tv and sound cables to 5.1? or does it still send analong?
The red and whites only send analog. There are 3 ways that I am aware of to get digital audio to a receiver....optical cable, HDMI cable, or coaxial (RCA from a Coax digital output **uncommon**)
I would agree with this statement... Do the HDMI or component to the television and optical into the receiver from 5.1 device. A bank of optical inputs in the back of the receiver is more common than a bank of HDMIs isn't it? Plus the cables are probably cheaper too. Maybe I've been out of the A/V scene too long. I'm rockin' a bank of Coax digital and optical inputs...and a couple outputs.
What you can do is plug the HDMI cable from the PS3 directly into the TV. Then take either the optical out from the PS3 or from the TV and connect it to a 5.1 (6 channel) receiver. I have a 6 channel receiver for sale if that is what you want to do. It has optical and coaxial connections. I'll send you a PM. ~Dan
Found some intresting stuff on Amazon Blue Tooth and all for less than 200 smackers.... I would like to find somthing localy though....
If you want 7.1 audio from certain blu-ray movies, then you would need to hook it up like: HDMI - Audio: ps3 -> receiver Component - Video: ps3 -> receiver or tv's 1080i inputs. Then adjust the audio and video settings in the ps3. That's the way I have mine setup. Digital optical audio is not capable of 7.1 surround; only 5.1. Actuallly, some people prefer Coax for digital audio as it is jitter free. A common issue with optical (and possibly hdmi). But this is not an option with the ps3. Just thought I'd add some insight.
http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/audiooutput.html the only outputs on my PS3 are Optical, HDMI, and the rca (red yellow white), witch can go to the reciever to emulate 5.1 or what not.... my stoopid reciver only has inputs for 2 channel and an hdmi output for the monitor.
I think I found the onefor me! Nothing fancy but good enough. http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3727696
Nope, you're not out of hte loop. That is a legitimate setup for good digital audio. Our setup is like this: 55" LED optical audio to the receiver. HTPC optical audio to receiver DVD player coax to receiver The HTPC plays all DVDs and BluRays and all our saved TV content, along with PC Games. The DVD player will likely be phased out since it does't really serve any purpose at this point. And anything we connect direct to the TV (the Wii, or the PS2) can send the audio signal down the optical from the TV to receiver. The TV has 5 HDMI ports, so as more HDMI devices come around, there will be more opportunities to use the TV as the middleman receiver.
