Or at the dealership. I think that they are only a couple hundred dollar bucks.

What kind of experience do you have under the hood? The clutch replacement itself is pretty "easy", it's just getting to it that's the problem. In my opinion, it's not really that difficult (skill wise), it's just a bunch of labor (I pull the motor).

well if they only last 55k, a 30k is over half it's life gone

my mechanic is quoting like $1400 for parts and labor - sheesh, i figured these things would last longer than that for that much

I did my clutch at somewhere between 140-150k on my car. Judging by how hard it was to split the motor and tranny, I can only assume it was the original clutch. I've got 190+ on it now and it's showing no signs of slowing. I wouldn't be expecting to replace one every 50k or so unless you're planning to beat on it daily.

Clutch life is hard to quantify via miles. Even duty cycles. Figure however long your oem one has lasted is about how long the replacement one will last.
As far as cost. Figure $600+- on labor at shop rate. You can figure out the parts cost on your own (clutch, throw-out bearing, pressure plate, pilot bearing, and flywheel - resurfaced or new).
