I know grimmspeed sells all the fluids together but with my work schedule it's hard for me to make it there during their business hours and I really do not want to pay $14 to ship it. Figured I would check here to see if anyone has any of the fluids available or know where I could buy them I am only able to find the penzoil synchromesh as autozone. Max 952-836-5078
I'd recommend doing some research on the cocktail and consider running the Subaru OEM 75w-90 or Motul 300 75w-90 instead.
^What he said Max! I had Mike Wray rebuild my trans many years ago. He is a very good engine builder/Subaru mechanic that has been involved in Rally racing for quite a long time. He told me that the cocktail was not good for the trans and i never looked back as i trust him completely. Grab the OEM Subaru gear oil.
Please don't use the cocktail. Yes short term it may feel better, but long term this will make your transmission worse. Take the advice above
Mmm, I'm sure some bathtub hooch transmission 'cocktail' is better than what the car company came up with as proper when developing the car.
+1 for the OEM stuff. I came on here all stoked about switching out my gear oil for the cocktail. Got my fire extinguished almost instantly and was told to get itnout immediately. I've still got the jug at home that I drained it into. That **** separated like oil and water.
Another vote against the cocktail. Ran it in 2 cars for while....both shifted like butter, then began making bearing noise. One was killed by transmission bearing failuire
The dealerships now sell the Subaru gear oil in quarts now. Do the diff too. Go to Morrie's and ask for the discount. Take the time to do it right. Rye Manhattan for me. Peychaud's Bitters please.
Sounds like I'll stick with my oem stuff in there already thanks for the info. Read mixed opinions on nasioc as well but seems to be more worse reviews then better after more research.
I believe I have all the necessary fluids to make Scotty's cocktail on my shelf. Free to anyone who wants to pick it up. If interested, PM me and I can get photos of exactly what I have.
Someone like me on the internet says I trust the company who spent millions of dollars developing a product and their recommendations for the fluid to put in it. but I'm sure you know better
Do what you feel comfortable with. Seems if getting the ingredients of the mix is a pain, just one stop at the dealership might be the way to go now that you don't have to bring your own jug or buy 10 gallons of it.
Oh, my bad. I didn't realize that working on people's commuter cars meant that you actually designed the components of the cars you work on.
Sure do, but I'm not under the illusion that I'm making it better or more efficient than the factory by doing so. Where are you a tech?
When did the original post say he was trying to make it better or more efficient. He was simply looking for a certain kind of fluid not a review or your guys opinions. Then again I forgot forum people know it all Don't worry about what dealer I work at we only see commuter cars. By the way Subaru has millions of dollars in reasearch on their cars I would go around changing parts. I'm done here
Please let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. Getting all huffy because multiple people are providing a warning against something out of concern for another forum member shows you for
I've run Scotty's and Andrewtech cocktails in my 5mt and Subaru OEM in my 6mt. Go Andrewtech if you insist on a cocktail, but really the Subaru OEM is probably the best bet. Uncle Scotty's was proven a while ago to be somewhat unreliable to run in Subaru Trannys with Blackstone readouts: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?p=24034470#post24034470 It's not guaranteed to grenade your tranny, but Extra-S is likely the safest bet.
So you mock and make sarcastic comments like above....Yet you trust some guy on the internet who says, hey, mix a bunch of off the shelf fluids together and trust that they will be good for your transmission? AND YOU'RE A TECH?
And I understand that. But i have met Max and he's a good dude who has had a string of not so great luck with the Subies. If i can steer him clear of possible future misfortunes like i and many others have experienced with Scotties cocktail, then i will. Again, Mike Wray(a well known Subaru tech in these parts for his knowledge of Subarus. Who also worked with his father who has 40+ years working on them)tells me that, "you should get it out and never run it in there again". And "your syncros will thank you". Then i am going to go with that. I am glad that you have had success with it tho! Transmissions are expensive for those of us that don't know how to work on them....just looking out for the guy!
I must say I find it oddly funny how many people are so anal about running factory fluids using the "engineers at the company know what's best" argument yet also have aftermarket wheels, tires, suspension components, bigger turbo and injectors, bigger intercooler, etc.
All of that **** is run at your own risk too. You're not surprised when you crank the boost up and eventually pop an engine, are you?
