In the market for a 4 wheeler. Thought I'd see if anyone's considering getting rid of one (and yes, I've seen SubiDG's Polaris Explorer FS thread). Want one that runs, as I don't really need another project. Other than that requirement, I'm pretty open to whatever, so if you got one laying around that you might be interested in selling, post er up. Prefer a sport quad, most likely - but I'm also looking at some smaller/sportier 4x4 quads with floorboards instead of pegs and auto tranny so that the GF can ride without getting too scary.
Not much more of a bullet proof motor than this one http://mnsubaru.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31919&highlight=ltz+400
That's a good piece of info to know. A lot of my buddies have owned/own Banshee's, and they have to rebuild the damn engines like every single year. Also, yeah, this is basically what I'm looking for. Although, if someone's got an older beat up unit for cheaporz I'd also consider that so I don't have to take out a damned loan. lolz.
You get what you pay for thats for sure! Banshee = fun, exciting, fast quad ... also they are a pain in the ass to maintain. I think I would stay away from a Banshee or even the likes of a quadzilla or other 2 stroke older quad unless you really want to be doing all the NEEDED work they require. I owned a DRZ 400 (virtually the same motor as the LTZ 400) it was an 01 and I just sold it last summer, it had some valvetrain noise that pretty much started from the get go but it was never rebuilt and nothing internally was ever touched. I did however change the oil on my bike every 300-500 miles with Amsoil. The fun thing about that motor is you can lug it down soooooooo low and it still pulls you out of a corner, not to mention throw a Yoshimura exhaust on it (thats who devoloped the motor for Suzuki) and the thing is 36-38 hp. Which I feel is more than plently to get you into trouble.
LMAO. Far from Bulletproof Chet. Come of my apartment one day and I'll show you pieces of a LTZ400 motor.
06 Yamaha YFZ 450. Nerf bars, aluminum skid plates, filter, jets, +2 a arms, brand new front tires (don't recall brand), pretty new razr2's (iirc) on back, spark arrester removed, some aftermarket handlebars, all stock parts included (except a arms), extra set of ice racing tires :naughty: $4k. Was hoping to get down a bit off that, but I had to run out tonight just to have first dibs. Sheesh. I thought the economy was bad, but these units seem to be selling fast right now. I pick it up Sat, assuming the trailer deal goes through tomorrow, lol. I was looking at the quadsport z400's, but a guy selling an 05 tipped me to a recall they had. The magnesium clutch cover reacted with the coolant and turned into sludge that got lodged in the coolant passageways. I saw photos. It looked like a mess. That ruled out all 05-06 Suzuki/Kawasaki/Artic Cat 400's for me.
2 strokes are far superior to 4 strokes as far as maintenance and reliability is concerned. If you beat on your 2 stroke the only thing you have to do is a top end every 35 hours or so of riding, and that is only ~$100. And as for your 36-38 hp 400 is concerned, my 125 2 stroke makes ~37 horsepower  4 strokes are for tree huggin' environmentalists.
Yeah, but nothing newer is 2 stroke. My various friends experience with their 4 strokes has all been good, but they do maintain their wheelers well. I don't know if anything will be quite as fun as those modded Banshee's were, though.
03 YZ 125, FMF exhaust, Vforce reeds.. They are 33 hp from the factory, so I figure somewhere in the 36-37 hp range would be about right :dunno: It's probably going up for sale soon here, we'll see how much use I get out of it in the next month. But congrats Qstarin, I'm sure that quad still rips pretty good. I just wish 2 strokes weren't going the way of the dinosaur.
Good bike. I had an '01 and now have an '05 yz125. The '05 rips way harder than the '01 did. Depending on what you want for your '03, I might know a few different guys (both have 450s) who are sort of looking for a 125 since they are so dang fun. Smokers aren't going away for a while (well at least smoker bikes).....I bought a new '08 KTM 200xc last summer. That bike rules -- ~40hp at the wheel.
Right, thats why all cars are two strokes....wtf dude. A two stroke is the equivilant to a rotary, or top fuel engine, time bomb. Powerful and simple however.
Thx. I'm sure it rips just fine, too. I just kinda figure that all the benefits of a newer unit outweigh any 2-stroke vs. 4-stroke differences in my application. And, frankly, there's a fair selection of used 4 strokes out there right now, not so with 2 strokes. I'll guess I'll see how I feel about that again when the first rebuild comes due. I'm picking a trailer and the wheeler up tonight and heading north tomorrow maybe. I'm pretty stinking excited - first quad I'll own, I've only just ridden friend's units prior to this. Oh, did I mention it comes with ice tires.
A bike or quad probably gets as much use in a month as a car does in a day, so that's hardly a valid argument.
Okay so with your argument of how much greater two strokes are then 4 strokes, WHY ARECARS 4 STROKES? whats the highest mileage two stroke automobile? (IE saab sonnet, subaru 360, ect) two strokes are simple and powerful, no doubt, but for anything other then racing (or where light weight is essential, IE watercraft, ect) a 4 stroke will last longer, return far better fuel mileage, have more low end torque, and wont need to have fuel mixed. Sorry for the thread jack Qstarin, I'm done in here!
i have a 2008 Yamaha Raptor 250, GYTR intake, gytr slip on muffler and head pipe, gytr jet kit, new maxxis tires on the rear, stock dunlops on the front, has 2 years left of warranty, $3500
Uh, a 250 pinger makes more power everywhere (up to around 10k rpm) compared to a 250F. The pinger will make waaaaay more low end torque. Cars are 4 strokes due to emissions.
Thats fine, but the blanket statement is that pingers last longer, its not the case at all. We still wouldnt have two stroke cars that outnumber four stroke cars even if there never were any emissions.
Racing pingers have about the same rebuild schedule as racing 4-strokes. One costs quite a bit more to rebuild; take a guess which one it is, hehe. The argument of what engine a commuter car has is irrelevant. Where is this so-called "blanket statement" you speak of?
Wow this went down hill fast!! Congrats on the quad OP. Ohh and Tom I am sure that my dad and his 3 friends ride there KTM "race bikes" EXC (04-06 before the street legal ones) 525 and 450's more than hard enough. All they have done so far is adjust the valves and change the oil ...
The KTMs are quite a bit more robust than the Japanese bikes, especially the 450s. Hell, most guys I know don't do a topend on their 200 pingers until around 200 hours of hard racing. A lot of the ticking time bomb stigmas of the 4-strokes come from the 250f MX bikes/quads that are way overdue on maintenance. Those things have to rev so high to make any power and are tuned much more aggressively than their 450 big brothers.
i can call the guy who has my old 440ex if your deal falls through.... i spent LOTS on it and it is a super reliable quad. yank the tires everywhere. it is a 400ex bored to a 440 with 12.5:1 wiseco piston, race ported head, stage 2 hot cam, i dont remember the name of the pipe but it was the best one out for the 400. 2 sets of nerf bars, 2 sets of tires and lots lots more. pm me if your deal does fall through. im sure you could get it fairly cheap. also, if you need a set of studded ice tires... i can sell you some cheap. pm me about that too if you're interested.
