Okay, thanks for the info. Will need to do a little more research before I have you order one.

Still open to buying a used one if anyone's got one laying around.

hey, qstarin. would you do me a huge favor? when you get one, and before you install it. could you take a couple pictures of it?

I'm looking into putting an electronic sensor in place of the cable on my EA-series trans. And that might help tell if it's even remotely possible.

    Absolutely.

I've already got some shots of the electronic from the 4EAT and the spot where the cable went on the 5MT after I ripped it out. I don't think I've had time to post em in my tranny swap thread yet.

I'll PM forum links to you when they're up.

As for whether or not it's remotely possible, I was reading the transmission FSM for my 01 RS and the assembly diagram made it look like it was all the same inside the tranny as what I can see on my 93 Legacy cable-speedo tranny. Also, I've seen several different people on various Subaru forums say it's plug and play - I assumed they meant from the 4EAT to the 5MT, but now I'm investigating if it was supposed to be plug and play from a electronic 5MT into a cable 5MT.

^^^ Not sure exactly what that is, but that thing above AT looks nothing like the speed sensor in my 4EAT. They both look like something that might fit in the MT I've got.

Car manufacturers should use nice color photos. That would be cool.

oh, it's definitely an easy swap on an EJ-series trans. I know piddster grabbed a cable pickup from a first-gen legacy (I think it might have been an auto too) and it plugged right into his 6MT. so your swap should be easy. my trans is a touch different from yours though.

and yea....I've got FSMs up the wazoo. those drawings make it look like they're kinda similar. but nothing concrete.

of course, I probably won't know for sure until I get one in my hand and try it, but I'd like to avoid buying one if it's definitely not going to work.

That's why I'm looking for a used one. Too bad morrie's doesn't have one in stock, then I'd go look at it. Maybe I'll see if a place like Checker's has a knock-off that fits.

I'll definitely take pics if I get near one.

I've got nothing against it.....but they don't really make aftermarket speedos that plug in to the subaru cable....but are programmable to use the stock electric sender.

Here's what it looks like for those interested. It definitely looks like it will thread into the hole in the tranny. I just have to figure out the wiring. Hopefully 3 wire is what I need - I seem to recall there's a 2-wire VSS for Subaru, too.
