Found out a few of my valves were bent so now im weighing my options. Get new valves or buy used heads.

If anyone wants to sell their DOHC head let me know.

    Thanks, jason

Well, depends on how much you wanna sell them for. I want my car running for that LaX Cruise so i am willing to spend a little more.

Would I need to get my car tuned? I am stage 2 right now.

They would still need to be shimmed and possibly have the seats touched up.

Buckets are what go over the spring, and depending on the heads, what the cam rides on. '02-'03 have a shim under the bucket, '97-'98 DOHC 2.5 heads have a shim over the bucket. '04+ WRX heads have a shimless bucket meaning the bucket itself varies in thickness to shim the valve.

The valves are shimmed so they close all the way, but do not leave a gap between the bucket and the cam lobe. Many people do not realize they need to have their valves re-shimmed on WRX's after 100k. Thats how they end up with burnt valves.

Thank you, very informative. Just curious, when they re shim the heads on a 04+ wrx do they replace the buckets or put shims in?

If you are redoing your valves just convert to shimless buckets.

Also I have a set of WRX heads ('02 IIRC) which are for sale. Guy in Alaska was supposed to get back to me and hasnt for like a month. I think I have pretty much everything except for cams, sensors, and 1 exhaust stud. if you were to swap these in you should be able to use your cams, sensors and exhuast stud. PM me if your interested.

I'm not totally sure on that one. I know there is a post on the underside of the bucket like others to press on the valve stem. That post can be ground to fit. I'm not sure how they do it at the dealer or a machine shop though. We are talking about clearances in the order of thousandths here.

I just happen to have an EJ25D head sitting here next to me on the workbench so I thought I'd throw up some pics to illustrate. The EJ25D is a shim-over-bucket design as you can see how the shim rests on the top of the bucket. My dillema is whether or not the WRX buckets work on these heads. I have a hunch they might as it would typical Subaru style to use the same stuff. Only if Jason would have remembered to bring that bucket to firestone on friday
