Ok, no he didn't. ;) But the stock turbo on my car just gave up the ghost. It's got 116k on it, this wasn't an unforseen event. I was just hoping to keep it going until next year. The good news is there are no shavings in the oil that we've found, but it's making some really ugly noises from the turbo. We're thinking that it's some sort of bearing issue inside the turbo from the noises it's making.

So, now to decide whether or not to go with another stock turbo and see how long that lasts or to just upgrade now to a 16G like I was thinking. I'd love to hear from anyone out there with either a standard or a big 16G, I'm trying to decide which to go with. I'm not looking for huge numbers, just more of a point and shoot setup. I've already got upgraded injectors set to go in and I'll have a Walbro here shortly. So, standard and big 16G guys let me know what you think. Thanks!

I don't have a 16G but as your attorney I highly recommend that over another stocker

I have the 16G EVO III and I have been relatively happy with it. If your worried at all about turbo lag, I wouldn't go anything bigger than the 16G. This is my opinion though. I haven't had a chance to ride in a car with a larger turbo, but I know that mine has a considerable amount more lag than the stocker. On the other hand, it reminds you why you are waiting when it finally spools up. From all the research I did prior to buying it, it is the best all around turbo you can get for the 2.0 engine. If you have a 2.5 then a 20G is probably a better solution.

Mind you, all my knowledge comes from internet reading. So, maybe some of you guys who have actually ran multiple setups can give a first hand experience.

Yeah congrats Evan, you beat a car with a blown head gasket

Back on topic though, Evans car hauled nonetheless and it didn't feel that laggy riding in it although I never drove it. If you wanna buy another stocker for cheap I'll sell you my 20G next winter!

Turbo lag is something I'm trying to stay away from if at all possible. I know with a 2.0 it'll always be there, but I'm trying to balance the trade between lag/power. I couldn't care less about overall dyno numbers, I want something that's going to be a riot in every day driving. I don't plan on going any bigger than a 16G, that's more of the upper end of what I was thinking since I'm running a 2.0l.

Well I guess the thing you are going to have to ask yourself is if the extra premium you'll have to pay on a 16g variant is going to be worth the little extra top end you'll get over a vf39.

Turbo lag is is a retarded concept that people worry about. All you are doing is shifting your power band to the right. You might not spool at 3k, but you'll hold a lot more boost to redline. You are obviously capable with a manual transmission.

    I say 18 or 20g. w00t

Well, skip the 18. Go with the big 16 (evoIII or Db monster). They will put out the same power as the 18 and spool as quick or quicker than the vf39. Steve-o can chime in with his boost onset and full boost numbers, and if you stick with a stock header it will be even quicker. As far as I am concerned, a vf39 is only if you want to go cheap. The big 16g will push almost 150cfm more than the vf39 with the same spool. If you need cheap, I would also look for a vf30 or vf22. Same cold side as the 39, but larger hot sides.

Something else to consider is transmission. WRX1 has a AT which helps with spool up.

Alright B, speaking from experience, plan ahead, like a few years ahead. If you're looking to fanise and expland your driving skills perhaps a moderate turbo DB16G. If your ready for some track and want to make a statement get a TD05 20g. You can always turn down the boost, but you can only crank it up by soo much.

    Enjoy!

ha ha fear and loathing in Las Vegas is awsome, but seriously the guy who got his car tuned with mine was running a 20g on a 2.0L and didn't spool till 5,000.

    Yes, it's a 5 speed. ;)

I went the cheap route tonight and picked up a used stocker for the time being. I need to get the car running first and foremost, then I can start looking at what to get. I want to do a bit more research into this, as my turbo choice will likely shape my future mods regarding my drivetrain and I'm not sure how far into this one I want to get. I'm not that worried about busting my gearset because I don't launch and I shift like a grandmother on valium for the most part. Now, off to do some more reading...

I dont want to drive the piss out of my car at the top end all the time, I spend more time in the lower part of the powerband than the upper part. much, much more time. I wouldn't call it a "retarded concept." Its not like non laggy turbos are even popular, most people go with whatever gets the biggest dyno number that they can afford anyways, then never race them and just drive them around the street as a commuter or once in a while car. To me that's whats retarded.

What he said. I don't want or need to have the highest dyno number possible, especially with a 2.0l. That kind of setup gives me a powerband as thin as Paris Hilton after a month in a vomitarium and about as useful. I have to find that balance between reliablility and performance as well due to my fire job.

All that being said, my twin T72 setup should be here early next week.

That's funny. Remember back when I was saying how much of a dog my car is? Well that's because I was getting passed by pontiac sunfires and corollas getting on to on-ramps because I like to shift chill and smooth down low (fully engaged before even hitting 1000rpm). It wasn't until I experimented with starting a little more aggressively in the 2-3000rpm range until I realized how much go there is to be had from a dig.

I'd hate to see that situation exacerbated by the fact that the power band was just shifted over by 1000+ rpm. That would suck.
