I've got a 05 impreza WRX - my first oil changed I went to Mobile1 fully synthetic. I put in the factory suggested 4Q- after a couple weeks, it needed to added about 1Q and just checked it againa few weeks later and I need to added about another quart. I've been looking around to see what could be causing this, but I'm not really finding answers. The only thing I could think it could be is the rings wearing out, am I missing something? Anyone else have anythoughts?
Oil capacity with a filter change is 4.6 or 4.7 qts. That's the first problem. Also, M1 tends to burn faster than other oils.
Yup, you didnt add enough oil, its 4.5 4.7. And there are far better oils out there then mobile1. Also, turbocharged cars in general use a little oil, its just how it is.
well son of a bee sting, thanks for the tips guys - I must have looked at the factory book wrong, what oil do you guys use. I've been a M1 since I could drive, maybe it's time to broaden my horizons.
I use Shell Rotella-T 5w40. It's actually a FULL synthetic and has much better wear properties and longevity than M1.
I have been using Castol Syntec after running both Mobil1 and Amsoil. Castrol has near zero burn-off, and is quite a bit cheaper than Amsoil is.
I got that idea from you. Very good idea too! I'm very happy that I made the switch. Still going to run Amsoil in the bike, but not in the car.
I have been running amsoil since my days of dirtbikes/wheelers. After seeing a 40 degree oil temp drop in the wheeler just be changing from honda gold to amsoil, I was hooked. Also, for those looking for amsoil, I can get it to ya for cost plus sales tax. Russ
That's for hi-temp summer oil, yes. 10w oil is for 40 degrees F and above. That being said, I'm running Castrol full syn 5w40 now, will be switching either to rotella or amsoil 10w40 in the summer. Never had a problem with oil burnoff with any Xw40 oil in my subaru.
mine said 710 :hsugh: actually now that i think of that, i'm pretty sure it said that on all data. i will have to check it out when i go back tomorrow.
When's the last time you checked Pep Boys/Autozone? I scored a case a few months back but I'm seeing people post up on BITOG that they're still seeing it out there. I need to find 3 more quarts to have enough for another 4 changes. Then it may be time to move on.
There really aren't any Autozones on the west side of town that are close enough to me to make it worth my trip. IMHO, the quality difference between "regular" and GC Syntec isn't worth my time, especially since I probably won't ever own a car long enough where there would actually be enough wear and tear to warrant a re-build on the motor.
Just popped in a couple autozones in the past two days and each had a full slot of GC (20+ 1qt bottles). It also appears they started manufacturing again as most had 2008 date stamps. The only bad news is it's full price again. When I stocked up a couple years back it was just shy of 4 bucks a qt.
i've noticed the running mobile 1 full synthetic in my 2.5 rs. after a while (a thousand or more) im missing a quart or so of whats recommended 5-35. would the castrol full synthetic or something else be a better option for us both? btw i was able to buy mobile 1 for cheaper then a shop at Costco Costco FTW!!!
Don't think this is an actual oil weight. Most of the Subaru vehicles have 5w-30 as the recommended oil weight(direct from the service manual), but it mostly depends on your climate variation.
sorry i was out of it last night. it says 5w-35 on my cap, though i can and will double check. i've only heard good things before about mobil1, its makes me worry now knowing that thats what i put in and its not the best in your guys better informed opinions. thanks!
Mobil1 isn't necessarily a bad oil, it just seems to burn off faster than some other oils. If you choose to run it, just check the level often.
